A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO URGE THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA DELEGATION TO THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS AND MEMBERS OF SOUTH CAROLINA STATE GOVERNMENT TO WORK TOGETHER TO TIMELY REAUTHORIZE THE STATE CHILDREN HEALTH INSURANCE PROGRAM TO ASSURE FEDERAL FUNDING FOR THE SOUTH CAROLINA STATE CHILDREN HEALTH INSURANCE PROGRAM.

Whereas, the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina regards the health of our children to be of paramount importance to families in our State; and

Whereas, members regard poor child health as a threat to the social and psychological well-being and educational achievement of South Carolina's children; and

Whereas, the General Assembly considers protecting the health of our children to be essential to the welfare of our youngest citizens and to the quality of life in our State; and

Whereas, an integral part of arrangements for health benefits for children, the South Carolina State Health Insurance Program has enrolled sixty-nine thousand children since its inception; and

Whereas, the program is of overwhelming and understood value in preserving child wellness, preventing and treating childhood disease, improving health outcomes, and reducing overall health costs; and

Whereas, the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina considers federal funding for the South Carolina State Health Insurance Program to be indispensable to providing health benefits for children of modest means; and

Whereas, it is imperative for all those involved in state government to work together with educators, health care providers, social workers, and parents to ensure that all available public and private assistance for providing health benefits to uninsured children in this State be maximized; and

Whereas, the General Assembly finally believes that all children who qualify for Medicaid or the State Children Health Insurance Program should be identified and enrolled so that proper health care is provided to all South Carolina children. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, urge the members of the South Carolina delegation to the United States Congress and members of South Carolina state government to work together to timely reauthorize the State Children Health Insurance Program to assure federal funding for the South Carolina State Children Health Insurance Program.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to each member of the South Carolina Congressional Delegation.
