VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
DESIGNATING JANUARY 29, 2007, AS MILTON FRIEDMAN DAY TO HONOR ECONOMIST MILTON FRIEDMAN, WHOSE VISION OF AMERICA HELPED SPREAD THE BENEFITS OF FREE-MARKET ECONOMICS THE WORLD OVER.
Whereas, Milton Friedman's work has served to advance America's economy; and
Whereas, in an atmosphere of intense intellectual activity at the University of Chicago's Economics Department, he began to synthesize his theories of economics, which not only transformed the landscape of economics around the world, but also lent powerful support to the economic, political, and social benefits of a free market and limited government; and
Whereas, he has applied his vision of America to help abolish the draft, create jobs, and advance the course and positive effects of American business; and
Whereas, possessing wisdom ahead of his time, Mr. Friedman proclaimed what we as a nation have since acknowledged to be an important truth: "The society that puts equality before freedom will end up with neither. The society that puts freedom before equality will end up with a great measure of both"; and
Whereas, Mr. Friedman's work has been validated by an extensive list of honors, such as the Nobel Prize in economics (1976) and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1988); and
Whereas, it is appropriate to recognize the work of a man whose influence is felt in the daily lives of nearly every American, a man who to this day champions the power of choice that Americans treasure. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, designate January 29, 2007, as Milton Friedman Day to honor economist Milton Friedman, whose vision of America helped spread the benefits of free-market economics the world over.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Milton Friedman.
