TO CONGRATULATE DAWN SMITH, TEACHER AT BOOKMAN ROAD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN RICHLAND COUNTY, ON BEING NAMED RICHLAND COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT TWO TEACHER OF THE YEAR AND A FINALIST FOR THE SOUTH CAROLINA TEACHER OF THE YEAR FOR 2007-2008, AND TO EXTEND SINCERE APPRECIATION FOR HER MANY CONTRIBUTIONS TO EDUCATION IN SOUTH CAROLINA.
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives were pleased to learn that Bookman Road Elementary School teacher Dawn Smith was named the Richland County School District Two Teacher of the Year and is also one of five finalists for South Carolina Teacher of the Year for 2007-2008; and
Whereas, a National Board-certified fourth-grade teacher, Dawn Smith has been an educator for six years; and
Whereas, empowering her students to think for themselves and to stand up for what they believe, Dawn creates a unique classroom community where her students feel confident to grow into young leaders; and
Whereas, believing that test scores are but one indicator of student success, she assesses her students' progress on multiple levels after developing relationships with students and their families during home visits; and
Whereas, Dawn sees her career as a teacher as a high calling, and relishes in the intangible rewards she receives each day when her students accomplish goals they never thought possible; and
Whereas, it is appropriate for the members of the House of Representatives to pause in their deliberations to honor Dawn Smith, who amply demonstrates the qualities of a model teacher who not only educates the children of South Carolina, but also provides for them the opportunity to live complete and successful lives as the future leaders of our community. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate Dawn Smith, teacher at Bookman Road Elementary School in Richland County, on being named Richland County School District Two Teacher of the Year and a finalist for the South Carolina Teacher of the Year for 2007-2008, and extend sincere appreciation for her many contributions to education in South Carolina.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dawn Smith.
