A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE BLYTHEWOOD'S LITTLE ZION BAPTIST CHURCH ON THE OCCASION OF ITS HISTORIC ONE HUNDRED SEVENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY AND TO COMMEND THE CHURCH FOR ALMOST TWO CENTURIES OF SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY.

Whereas, having been founded in 1832, Blythewood's Little Zion Baptist Church will celebrate its historic one hundred seventy-fifth anniversary in October of 2007; and

Whereas, at its first location on the "Ole Winnsboro Highway," just above the church's present location, early worship took place under a brush arbor, the congregation later moving to a log cabin on the old homestead belonging to the Entzminger family, members of which continue to worship at the church to this day; and

Whereas, though an oppressed and enslaved people, the church's early pastors and members held on to their God with a steadfast and unmovable faith, looking with hope to the future and secure in the Lord's love for them; and

Whereas, by the grace of God, in those early days Little Zion Baptist Church at last was able to purchase three acres of land for thirty dollars and erect on the site a wooden frame building, the church's first known sanctuary; and

Whereas, the church's present beautiful sanctuary was built in 1995 to the glory of God, and additional land was purchased for further ministry and burial space; and

Whereas, standing on the faith and strength of its early pastors and members, Little Zion Baptist Church's present congregation "press[es] toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 3:14), continuing to preach and teach the unadulterated Word of God and serving its own, as well as the community, through such ministries as Sunday School, the Singles Ministry, the Couples Ministry, the Little Zion Day Care Center, the Bible Study Program, and the Drama Ministry; and

Whereas, Little Zion Baptist Church has been a beacon of light in the community of Blythewood for one hundred seventy-five years, and, God willing, led by its current senior pastor, E.W. Davis, will continue its godly heritage in many more years of worship and service. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize Blythewood's Little Zion Baptist Church on the occasion of its historic one hundred seventy-fifth anniversary and commend the church for almost two centuries of service to the community.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Pastor E.W. Davis on behalf of the congregation of Little Zion Baptist Church.
