A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR ROBERT W. HARRELL, OF CHARLESTON, FOR HIS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AS A MEMBER OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA TRANSPORTATION COMMISSION FROM THE FIRST CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT AND TO THANK HIM FOR HIS CONTINUING COMMITMENT AND EFFORTS ON BEHALF OF HIS COMMUNITY AND STATE.

Whereas, Mr. Robert W. "Bob" Harrell is a widely respected business, civic, and community leader in Charleston and in South Carolina; and

Whereas, he recently concluded a term of exceptional service on the South Carolina Transportation Committee, representing the First Congressional District; and

Whereas, Mr. Harrell had previously served as a member of the Highways and Public Transportation Commission from 1990 until 1994, during which time he represented Berkeley and Charleston counties; and

Whereas, during his tenure on the commission, Mr. Harrell pushed for a new system of prioritizing road projects by need and helped develop a system which accelerated completion of several Charleston area road projects, including the three hundred seventy million dollar Mark Clark Expressway; and

Whereas, he and his lovely wife, Charlotte, have three grown children: sons, Robert W. Harrell, Jr., who represents District 114 in the South Carolina House of Representatives and is Speaker of the House of Representatives, and John Harrell, a practicing attorney with the law firm of Young, Clement, Rivers, and Tisdale; and daughter, Lea, who is a board certified child adolescent psychiatrist; and they have seven grandchildren; and

Whereas, public service is a high and honorable calling where citizens give of their time and talent to serve their fellowman, and Bob Harrell's service on the commission is an example of public service at its best; and

Whereas, the South Carolina Department of Transportation will honor Mr. Harrell on Thursday, March 15, 2007, for his immeasurable contributions to the agency and to the State of South Carolina; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives would like to publicly recognize and honor this outstanding South Carolinian for his wonderful contributions to the Department of Transportation, the Transportation Commission, and the State of South Carolina, as his service on the Transportation Commission comes to a close. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Robert W. Harrell, of Charleston, for his distinguished service as a member of the South Carolina Transportation Commission from the First Congressional District and to thank him for his continuing commitment and efforts on behalf of his community and State.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Robert W. Harrell.
