A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE THE SPARTANBURG CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY'S RELAY FOR LIFE EVENT, TO BE HELD MAY 18, 2007, AT DORMAN HIGH SCHOOL, AS PART OF THE SOCIETY'S FIGHT AGAINST CANCER.

Whereas, cancer is a group of diseases characterized by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells that, if not controlled, can result in death; and

Whereas, more than twenty-one thousand South Carolinians are likely to be diagnosed with cancer in 2007, and nearly nine thousand South Carolinians are expected to die from cancer this year; and

Whereas, the American Cancer Society is a voluntary, community-based health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem; and

Whereas, Relay for Life, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, will celebrate and honor South Carolinians and their families who have been affected by cancer; and

Whereas, held throughout the State of South Carolina, Relay for Life is a community affair that presents an opportunity for citizens to put on walking shoes and join with business associates, family, and friends to fight cancer; and

Whereas, one such event will be held in the Spartanburg community at Dorman High School on May 18, 2007, this year's event featuring recruitment of about eight hundred cancer-free volunteers from Spartanburg, as well as thousands more from two other Upstate counties, to participate in the American Cancer Society's third-ever cancer-prevention study; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives is pleased to recognize the Spartanburg Chapter of the American Cancer Society for this wonderful effort and encourages like participation by other local South Carolina chapters. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize the Spartanburg Chapter of the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life event, to be held May 18, 2007, at Dorman High School, as part of the society's fight against cancer.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Spartanburg Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
