A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND JOSEPH DUFFIELD, AGE NINE, AND JESSIE DUFFIELD, AGE SIX, OF YORK COUNTY, FOR THEIR EXEMPLARY WORK IN RAISING FUNDS TO SUPPLY MEDICINES FOR CHILDREN IN AFRICA WHO ARE AIDS VICTIMS.

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the South Carolina House of Representatives honors individuals who freely give of their time and resources for the good of others, especially those who need it most; and

Whereas, having learned at an early age that it is more blessed to give than to receive, Joseph Duffield, age nine, and Jessie Duffield, age six, of York County, have devoted themselves to making a difference in the lives of young AIDS victims in Africa and have shown themselves worthy of being numbered among those who are benefactors of mankind; and

Whereas, in December 2006, Joseph saw a television program that featured Keep a Child Alive, a charity group that raises money for HIV/AIDS medications for children in Africa. Shocked that most families in Africa cannot afford antiretroviral medications costing less than a dollar a day, Joseph wrote a letter to Congressman John Spratt about this matter and then planned and carried out a fundraising campaign, Pennies for Pills, to benefit Keep a Child Alive; and

Whereas, with the able assistance of his sister, Jessie, and a goal of two thousand dollars in mind, Joseph made signs explaining the project and pasted the signs on empty five-gallon water jugs to serve as collection repositories. He made a presentation at a church leadership training seminar, there finding nineteen churches willing to display the collection jugs, and also placed a jug at his school, Springfield Elementary in Fort Mill, where he made an appearance for the project on the school's televised announcements. He spoke at churches about his work and in the evening made phone calls to prospective donors; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives recognizes that the success of the State of South Carolina, the strength of its communities, and the vitality of American society as a whole depend, in great measure, upon the dedication of young people like Joseph and Jessie Duffield who use their talents and resources to serve others. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend Joseph Duffield, age nine, and Jessie Duffield, age six, of York County, for their exemplary work in raising funds to supply medicines for children in Africa who are AIDS victims.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Joseph and Jessie Duffield.
