A SENATE RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING THE NEWBERRY HIGH SCHOOL BULLDOGS FOOTBALL TEAM ON THEIR FIRST-EVER CLASS AA UPPER STATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP, COMMENDING THEIR HARD WORK AND DEDICATION THAT LED TO AN OUTSTANDING SEASON, AND WISHING THEM MUCH SUCCESS IN FUTURE SEASONS.

Whereas, for the first time, the Newberry High School Bulldogs football team became the Class AA Upper State football champions; and

Whereas, with a crushing 27-0 win over Columbia High School in November, the Bulldogs were able to advance to the school's first state championship game at Williams-Brice stadium in December; and

Whereas, with thousands of friends, family, and Bulldog supporters cheering them on in Columbia, Newberry narrowly lost an intense game to Cheraw, to become the second best team in Class AA football; and

Whereas, the Bulldogs had an impressive season. Finishing with a 12-3 record, the Bulldogs' hard work and dedication were not without reward, the team managed to stave off challengers with eleven straight victories, holding eleven of its fifteen opponents to seven points or less; and

Whereas, the team has been a great source of pride for the entire Newberry community. Not only did the team win its fourth Region 3-AA Championship in six years, the Bulldogs' coach and several players were also honored. Head Coach Sam Baird, selected as the Region Coach of the Year, was also named a 2006 Shrine Bowl Coach. The Bulldogs also boast the All Region Punter, three All Region Honors defensive players, five All Region Honors offensive players, five Class AA All State honors players, and the All Region Player of the Year, Sanchez Gartman, who joined Coach Baird at the 2006 Shrine Bowl. For the first time in twenty-five years, Newberry's program claimed both a player and a coach in the Shrine Bowl; and

Whereas, the players, coaches, and staff of the 2006 Newberry High School football team committed themselves to a season of excellence culminating in unprecedented achievements. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate, by this resolution, congratulate the Newberry High school football team for becoming the 2006 Class AA Upper State football champions, commend the hard work and dedication that led to an outstanding season, and wish them much success in future seasons.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to head coach Sam Baird and the 2006 Class AA Upper State Champions, the Newberry High School Bulldogs.
