A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND DR. JAMES W. GETTYS, OF ABBEVILLE COUNTY, ON OVER FORTY YEARS OF DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AS A PROFESSOR AT ERSKINE COLLEGE AND TO HONOR HIS SERVICE TO THE COLLEGE AND HIS COMMUNITY.

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the South Carolina General Assembly honors individuals who exemplify dedication and excellence in teaching; and

Whereas, Dr. James W. Gettys, a resident of Due West, has marked over forty years of dedicated service as a Professor of History and administrative faculty at Erskine College; and

Whereas, Dr. Gettys, a Rock Hill native, began his academic career at Erskine College where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1962, and ably furthered his educational achievements with a Masters degree from the University of South Carolina in 1968, and a Ph. D. from the University of South Carolina in 1974; and

Whereas, Dr. Gettys' extraordinary tenure at Erskine College began in 1965 as an Instructor of History and continued over forty years as a Professor of History, Dean of Admissions, Director of Institutional Research, Vice President and Dean of Erskine College, and at present, McDonald-Boswell Professor of History; and

Whereas, the honors Dr. Gettys has received are a testament to his devotion to teaching and to Erskine College. He was selected twice for the Younts Excellence in Teaching Award, and was elected twice as Chairman of Erskine College Faculty; and

Whereas, as dedicated as he is to the students and faculty at Erskine College, Dr. Gettys also manages to be active in service to his church and community. He is a member of Due West ARP Church where he has served as Sunday School Teacher, Superintendent of Sunday Schools, a member of the Board of Deacons, and a member of the Session. He has also served on Presbytery Theological and Social Concerns Committee, on the Synod level as a member of Bonclarken Board of Trustees and Board of Publication, and as Vice Moderator of Synod. Finally, he is a member and President of the Abbeville Rotary Club and a municipal judge; and

Whereas, remarkably Dr. Gettys has found time to co-author "The Second Century: A History of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, 1882-1982", and as an avid cyclist, finish in the top half of a sixty-two mile group bike ride and complete a seventy-five mile bike ride in one day; and

Whereas, Dr. Gettys is the beloved husband of wife, Sandra Lockaby of Westminster, together they are the proud parents of two children, both graduates of Erskine College, Katherine Woods, an attorney in Columbia, and James W. Gettys III, a business entrepreneur, and they are the loving grandparents of one grandchild, Lettie Woods. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend Dr. James W. Gettys, of Abbeville County, on over forty years of distinguished service as a professor at Erskine College and honor his service to the college and his community.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. James W. Gettys.
