VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO COMMEND CAROLINE COLEMAN BENNETT, OF RICHLAND COUNTY, ON AUTHORING "CHARLEY'S COLUMBIA BACKYARD", A ONE-OF-A-KIND CHILDREN'S BOOK WHICH WAS RECENTLY NAMED THE OFFICIAL CHILDREN'S BOOK OF COLUMBIA FOR ITS UNIQUE CHILD'S PERSPECTIVE OF THE MOST CELEBRATED ATTRACTIONS IN COLUMBIA.
Whereas, Caroline Coleman Bennett, a native of Columbia, was honored for her book, "Charley's Columbia Backyard", by Mayor Bob Coble who named it the Official Children's Book of Columbia for its one-of-a-kind tour of the Capital City through the eyes of a child; and
Whereas, Mrs. Bennett's childhood memories accompanying her father on tours through the city, her own children's exploration of the city, and her genuine love of Columbia inspired her writing of "Charley's Columbia Backyard"; and
Whereas, this entertaining and educational literary work is a fun-filled adventure and historical journey into the many celebrated attractions of Columbia for children and an awakening for parents who have forgotten or never known of the many wonderful activities this great city has to offer; and
Whereas, Mrs. Bennett's son, Coleman, and his friend, Toni Ogun Fowora, inspired the two characters in the book, Charley and Bernard, who not only take the reader on an exciting journey through the city, but also give the reader an interactive checklist, called "Charley's Checklist", to encourage the reader to become a Junior Ambassador and venture out on the journey; and
Whereas, Mrs. Bennett has succeeded through "Charley's Columbia Backyard" and "Charley's Checklist" in instilling a sense of pride and appreciation by the residents of this city for its historical, cultural, educational, and entertaining activities, including visiting the historic State House Capitol and Robert Mills House, exploring EdVenture, the State Museum, and the Columbia Museum of Art, watching a puppet show at the Marionette Theatre, kayaking down the Broad River, and looking for swamp creatures at the Congaree National Park; and
Whereas, the book was the result of tremendous hard work, not only by the author, but also her three young children who helped their mother research the book over a three-year period, and her friend and high school classmate, Paula Hayne Bowers, who brought the story to life through her beautiful illustrations in the book; and
Whereas, creating "Charley's Columbia Backyard" was a natural progression for the Dreher High School and Clemson University graduate, who wrote speeches for several presidents of the Charleston Chamber of Commerce and had many articles published by varying local magazines; and
Whereas, Mrs. Bennett is the beloved wife of husband, Paul "Zeke" Bennett and together they are the proud parents of Coleman, Anna Young, and William. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend Caroline Coleman Bennett, of Richland County, on authoring "Charley's Columbia Backyard", a one-of-a-kind children's book which was recently named the Official Children's Book of Columbia for its unique child's perspective of the most celebrated attractions in Columbia.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Caroline Coleman Bennett.
