A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND MRS. IRBY H. SCHULTZ, OF LEXINGTON COUNTY, ON HER REMARKABLE LIFETIME OF OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO THE FIELD OF POLITICS AND THE REPUBLICAN PARTY.

WHEREAS, Mrs. Irby H. Schultz, of Lexington County, has truly lived a remarkable life of outstanding public service spanning four decades, which began in Texas where she worked with Mrs. George H. W. Bush to organize Republican precincts, served as a "Bush Belle" on the congressional campaign of George H. W. Bush, and organized one of the largest Republican Women's Clubs in Texas following the 1964 presidential campaign of Senator Barry M. Goldwater of Arizona; and

WHEREAS, it was Texas's loss and South Carolina's gain when Mrs. Schultz brought her formidable political skills and work ethic to the Palmetto State in 1972, beginning an era of steadfast dedication to the Republican Party that included service as delegate or alternate to five GOP National Conventions, Lexington County Delegation Secretary, Lexington County GOP Convention Chairman, President of the South Carolina Federation of Republican Women, organizer and President of the Dutch Fork Republican Women, volunteer on numerous political campaigns, and member of the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Federation of Republican Women since 1982, among many other things; and

WHEREAS, her tireless efforts on behalf of the Republican Party earned Mrs. Schultz much-deserved recognition, including the Yellow Rose of Texas Award from then-Governor George W. Bush of Texas in honor of her service to the Texas GOP, the The Bill Jackson Award from the Lexington County Republican Party, the Order of the Palmetto from Governor Carroll A. Campbell, Jr., the South Carolina Federation of Republican Women's Woman of the Year Award, recognition by the South Carolina Senate on the motion of Senator John M. "Jake" Knotts of Lexington, and designation as a South Carolina Palmetto Patriot by Lieutenant Governor André Bauer; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Schultz's service to the Palmetto State extends beyond the political arena to include appointments to the John De La Howe School's Governing Board, where she served for a decade and helped dedicate the school's Wilderness Program; the South Carolina Governor's Mansion Foundation Board; and as chair of the Hall of Governors project in the Lace House of the South Carolina Governor's Mansion complex; and

WHEREAS, a host of outstanding memories accompany Mrs. Schultz's lifetime commitment to political endeavors and the Republican Party, including attending the announcement by then-Vice President George H. W. Bush of his selection of Senator J. Danforth Quayle of Indiana as his vice presidential running mate while traveling aboard the Delta Queen riverboat to the 1988 GOP convention, riding a campaign train through South Carolina with President and Mrs. George H. W. Bush, having tea in the White House with Mrs. George H. W. Bush, attending a joint session of the United States Congress at the conclusion of Operation Desert Storm as a guest of Senator J. Strom Thurmond, serving as a legislative aide in the United States House of Representatives, and working as a staff member on the 2000 campaign of George W. Bush. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and commend Mrs. Irby H. Schultz, of Lexington County, for her lifetime of outstanding service to the field of politics and the Republican Party.
