A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO HONOR AND COMMEND ONE OF SOUTH CAROLINA'S MOST GENEROUS VOLUNTEERS AND PHILANTHROPISTS, MRS. MARTHA CHAPMAN OF SPARTANBURG, FOR A LIFETIME OF COMPASSIONATE AND CARING SUPPORT OF SO MANY WORTHWHILE ENTITIES AND ENDEAVORS INCLUDING THE SOUTH CAROLINA SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF AND THE BLIND AND WOFFORD COLLEGE, AND TO CONGRATULATE HER UPON HER RECEIPT OF THE DOUGLAS F. DENT DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD FROM THE SOUTH CAROLINA SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF AND THE BLIND AND UPON THE OPENING EARLIER THIS YEAR OF THE MARTHA CLOUD CHAPMAN GALLERY AT WOFFORD COLLEGE.

Whereas, Mrs. Martha Cloud Chapman is a leader in the Upstate region of South Carolina and is considered a pioneer in many areas. She was the first female trustee of the Spartanburg County Foundation, the first female Republican to serve on the South Carolina Election Commission, and the first female member of the South Carolina Development Board which is now the South Carolina Department of Commerce; and

Whereas, Mrs. Chapman serves in the community as a member of the board of Spartanburg Methodist College, First National Bank of South Carolina based in Spartanburg, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Spartanburg, the Walker Foundation for the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind, and Oakwood Cemetery Association. She also serves numerous community organizations in a variety of volunteer capacities; and

Whereas, this wonderful philanthropist has especially supported the cause of education in this State through her generous gifts to the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind and Wofford College among others; and

Whereas, she and members of her family have been involved with Wofford College throughout the college's history, several serving as trustees and alumni leaders, and have given generously to the college. Earlier this year, in her honor Wofford College officially opened its second gallery, the Martha Cloud Chapman Gallery, in the Raines Center; and

Whereas, in addition, recognized for a lifetime of service to and support of the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind, she was presented with the school's highest honor, the Douglas F. Dent Distinguished Service Award at the 2007 commencement exercises this month; and

Whereas, perhaps school president Sheila Breitweiser put it best with this characterization of Mrs. Chapman: "Her fundraising has been huge, but equally important is how she has helped to lead the effort towards us achieving recognition as a statewide school. Whatever we ask her to do, whether meeting with someone, raising money, or coming over and guiding us with a question about the arts, she is always there, and that makes her one of our greatest champions."; and

Whereas, this warm and gracious lady, whether it be with her own children or with the children of the Spartanburg community about whom she cares so deeply, has set an example of Christian love and generosity that serves as an example for others of whatever station in life to follow; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to publicly recognize and thank this remarkable South Carolinian for a lifetime of community service, support, and generosity which has benefited so many citizens of our State, and also congratulate her upon receipt of this truly deserved award from the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind, and the wonderful honor recently bestowed upon her by Wofford College. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly honor and commend one of South Carolina's most generous volunteers and philanthropists, Mrs. Martha Chapman of Spartanburg, for a lifetime of compassionate and caring support of so many worthwhile entities and endeavors including the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind and Wofford College, and congratulate her upon her receipt of the Douglas F. Dent Distinguished Service Award from the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind and upon the opening earlier this year of the Martha Cloud Chapman Gallery at Wofford College.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Martha Chapman.
