A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND DR. FRANCES L. HARDY, LANGUAGE ARTS TEACHER AT SPARTANBURG HIGH SCHOOL, FOR HER COMMITMENT TO PROVIDING QUALITY EDUCATION FOR THE CHILDREN OF SOUTH CAROLINA, AND TO CONGRATULATE HER UPON BEING NAMED A FINALIST IN THE 2007 SOUTH CAROLINA STATE TEACHER OF THE YEAR PROGRAM.

Whereas, it is with distinct pleasure that the South Carolina House of Representatives recognizes educators who approach teaching with passion, creativity, and infectious enthusiasm, along with appropriate academic preparation for their fields; and

Whereas, in the roll call of such South Carolina educators, Dr. Frances L. Hardy, language arts teacher at Spartanburg High School, stands chief among their numbers and richly deserves the honor of being named a finalist in the 2007 South Carolina State Teacher of the Year Program; and

Whereas, in preparation for her life's work, Dr. Hardy earned a bachelor's degree in English at Wofford College, followed by a master's degree in secondary education at Converse College, a doctorate in education in curriculum and instruction at the University of South Carolina, and she continues to further her education with courses at various institutions; and

Whereas, Dr. Hardy has taught for twenty-five years, the first year as a substitute teacher and the years since then as a full-time teacher at Spartanburg High School. In addition to her duties at the high school, which have included supervising over fifteen student and practice teachers, she has worked as an English instructor for adult education with Spartanburg School District 7 and as an adjunct instructor in English and a consultant and instructor for the Saturday Academy at the University of South Carolina Upstate; and

Whereas, a National Board-certified teacher, Dr. Hardy has presented at various workshops, such as the South Carolina Alliance of Black School Educators Conference in Myrtle Beach and the annual conference of the National Council of Teachers of English in Atlanta, Georgia, and she has won several awards, including Education Award Recipient, conferred by the East, West, and Spartanburg chapters of the NAACP; and

Whereas, as a published author, she has been featured in Literary South Carolina (Hub City Writers Project) and has penned various works, notably Peace Weaving and A Special Warmth, both published by Vision Unlimited, and Power of the Hands: African American Women as Shapers of Creative Expression in Adolescent Black Females, published in Education Issues (University of South Carolina Upstate); and

Whereas, not one to neglect her civic duty, Dr. Hardy serves as a trained volunteer with the Hospice and Palliative Care Foundation Community Action Team and a trustee of Mount Sinai Baptist Church, among numerous other community contributions; and

Whereas, her classroom provides an environment ripe for learning, where students can not only gain a firm educational foundation but also grow in self-confidence and respect for others under the mentorship of a caring master teacher; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives, with great admiration and appreciation, is pleased to honor this exceptional educator and daughter of South Carolina, Dr. Frances L. Hardy, as a finalist in the 2007 South Carolina State Teacher of the Year Program, and the members join with her colleagues, students, family, and friends in extending best wishes for great success in all her future endeavors. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend Dr. Frances L. Hardy, language arts teacher at Spartanburg High School, for her commitment to providing quality education for the children of South Carolina, and congratulate her upon being named a finalist in the 2007 South Carolina State Teacher of the Year Program.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Frances L. Hardy.
