TO RECOGNIZE AND WELCOME THE HONORABLE JOHN R. LEWIS, CONGRESSMAN FROM GEORGIA'S FIFTH DISTRICT, ON THE OCCASION OF HIS ADDRESS TO THE PHI BETA SIGMA AFRICAN-AMERICAN MALE IMAGE AWARDS.

Whereas, the Honorable John R. Lewis will serve as the keynote speaker at the African-American Male Image Awards to take place on February 9, 2008, at the Brookland Baptist Church Banquet and Conference Center; and

Whereas, sponsored by the Beta Chi Sigma Chapter of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity to fund various community-based projects, the banquet will honor contemporary African-American leaders in South Carolina; and

Whereas, the Honorable John R. Lewis stands as a worthy example of just such leadership, having dedicated his life to protecting human rights, securing civil liberties, and building what he terms the "Beloved Community" in America; and

Whereas, John Lewis was born the son of sharecroppers on February 21, 1940, outside of Troy, Alabama, and as a young person was inspired by the activism surrounding the Montgomery Bus Boycott; and

Whereas, by 1963, he was known in the Civil Rights Movement as one of the leaders of a group dubbed "the Big Six", and was named Chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee; and

Whereas, two years later, Hosea Williams and he led over six hundred peaceful protestors in Selma, Alabama, and were attacked by Alabama state troopers in a confrontation now known as "Bloody Sunday"; and

Whereas, he was appointed by President James E. Carter, Jr., in 1977 to direct the volunteers of ACTION, the federal volunteer agency, and was elected in 1981 to the Atlanta City Council before he was elected to Congress in 1986, where he has served for over twenty years; and

Whereas, Congressman Lewis earned degrees from Fisk University and from American Baptist Theological Seminary and holds numerous honorary degrees, as well as awards such as the Martin Luther King, Jr. Non-Violent Peace Prize and the John F. Kennedy "Profile in Courage Award" for lifetime achievement; and

Whereas, his autobiography entitled, "Walking with the Wind: A Memoir of the Movement", now records his notable life. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and welcome the Honorable John R. Lewis, Congressman from Georgia's Fifth District, on the occasion of his address to the Phi Beta Sigma African-American Male Image Awards.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Honorable John R. Lewis.
