A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE B. HENDERSON JOHNSON, JR., FOR BEING NAMED THE TWENTY-NINTH RECIPIENT OF THE DURANT DISTINGUISHED PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD BY THE SOUTH CAROLINA BAR FOUNDATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS.

Whereas, B. Henderson Johnson, Jr., counsel with the Aiken law firm of Johnson, Johnson, Whittle & Snelgrove, has been named the twenty-ninth recipient of the Durant Distinguished Public Service Award by the South Carolina Bar Foundation Board of Directors; and

Whereas, born and raised in Aiken, Mr. Johnson received his early education in his hometown and, after high school graduation, enlisted in the Marine Corps. His military service complete, young Johnson earned a bachelor of science from Newberry College and spent eight years with the United States Postal Service. In 1963, he obtained his law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law; and

Whereas, he married his one true love, Doris, and they have been blessed with three sons, Brad Johnson, M.D.; Barry Johnson (deceased); and Todd Johnson; and a daughter, Vicki Johnson Snelgrove; and

Whereas, following his early practice with the firm of Williams & Johnson, in 1980 he founded the Johnson law firm, which focused on criminal defense. Subsequently, he expanded the firm to bring in James Whittle; his two sons, Barry and Todd; his daughter, Vicki; and his daughter-in-law, Paige Weeks. They added expertise in family law, civil litigation, personal injury, workers' compensation, real estate, probate, social security, and disability law; and

Whereas, Mr. Johnson's accolades are many, including his selection to Order of the Whig and Robe and Best Lawyers in America. In addition, he is a member of the South Carolina Criminal Defense Lawyers and the South Carolina Trial Lawyers Association and has served as president of the Aiken County Bar Association; and

Whereas, not one to neglect community service, Mr. Johnson has spent countless hours working with youth, acting as coach, umpire, and "jack of all trades" for the Aiken Pony League. Known as the man who would do "anything and everything that needed to be done to give children an opportunity to participate in sports," Mr. Johnson twice has received a World Series Sportsmanship Award and has been inducted into the Aiken County Sports Hall of Fame. He is particularly known for his selfless work with the Hitchcock Rehabilitation Center, the University of South Carolina Aiken Partnership Board, and the American Cancer Society; and

Whereas, in Aiken, B. Henderson Johnson, Jr., is the only person to have been named both Citizen of the Year (1969) and Man of the Year (1998) by the Aiken Chamber of Commerce. In 2005, he was further honored in receiving the Order of the Palmetto from the Honorable Mark Sanford, Governor of South Carolina, as well as a Distinguished Citizen Award from the University of South Carolina Aiken; and

Whereas, established in memory of Charlton DuRant, a well-known Manning attorney who served as state senator and special associate justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court, the DuRant Award is considered the most prestigious statewide recognition that may be bestowed upon an attorney. The recipient is nominated and selected by his or her professional peers, and this year they will confer this honor upon Mr. Johnson at their annual convention on January 25, 2008, in Charleston; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are pleased to recognize B. Henderson Johnson, Jr., as the recipient of the Durant Distinguished Public Service Award and to offer their sincere gratitude for his lifetime of contributions to the Aiken community and to the great State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,
