A SENATE RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING THE SCHOOL DISTRICT OF OCONEE COUNTY FOR BEING NAMED ONE OF THE NATION'S "100 BEST COMMUNITIES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE" BY AMERICAN'S PROMISE-THE ALLIANCE FOR YOUTH, HONORING THE STUDENTS, TEACHERS, AND COMMUNITY FOR SETTING AN OUTSTANDING EXAMPLE FOR THE REST OF SOUTH CAROLINA, AND WISHING THEM MUCH CONTINUED SUCCESS IN BETTERING THE EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES OF ITS STUDENTS.

Whereas, the School District of Oconee County and the Oconee County community were named one of the nation's "100 Best Communities for Young People" in a competition sponsored by "America's Promise-The Alliance for Youth"; and

Whereas, the competition for "100 Best" serves to honor communities, ranging from small towns to urban neighborhoods across America; and

Whereas, Oconee County was named one of the best in America for its commitment to provide healthy, safe and caring environments for young people, its dropout prevention efforts, its emphasis on engaged learning, career clusters, and pre-engineering programs, as well as its ability to engage most students in extracurricular activities; and

Whereas, the Oconee County School District has implemented several options for students who fall behind to participate in programs that would allow them to continue their schooling, effectively decreasing the dropout rate; and

Whereas, this award was not based solely on the students and teachers. The designation of "100 Best Communities" was a concerted effort, aided by parents, businesses and volunteers within the community. Oconee County has many partners for youth, donating thousands of hours each year to the schools. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate, by this resolution, congratulate the School District of Oconee County and the community for being named one of the nation's "100 Best Communities for Young People," honor the students, teachers, and community for setting an outstanding example for the rest of South Carolina, and wish them much continued success in creating wonderful educational opportunities for its students.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Valerie Truesdale, Oconee County School District Superintendent and the Oconee County School Board.
