A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE DAVID AND MARTHA SENNEMA, OF COLUMBIA, ON THE OCCASION OF THEIR FIFTIETH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES FOR MANY MORE YEARS OF BLESSING AND FULFILLMENT.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to learn that David and Martha Sennema will celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary on February 22, 2008; and

Whereas, there is no greater success in life than a marriage and family life that endure the test of time and grow stronger with each passing year; and

Whereas, Dave and Marty's commitment to one another over the past fifty years serves as an inspiration to both family and friends. Their children say part of the couple's secret to a lifetime of joyful marriage is that they are first and foremost the best of friends and that they appreciate one another and have continued to laugh together over the years; and

Whereas, Dave Sennema, now retired, planned and organized the construction of the South Carolina State Museum while working as executive director of the South Carolina Museum Commission. For successfully completing the nine-year development of the State Museum, he was honored with the State's highest civilian award, the Order of the Palmetto, by Governor Riley in 1986. Also honored for his distinguished ground-breaking work as first executive director of the South Carolina Arts Commission and first general manager of the Columbia Music Festival Association, which developed the South Carolina Philharmonic under his direction, Dave continues his involvement with the arts by volunteering, serving on boards of directors, writing, and performing. His many years of building up the arts in South Carolina earned him the 2006 Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts, the highest recognition the State gives in this field; and

Whereas, Dave considers one of his crowning achievements as having had the good sense to marry his beloved Marty and to raise with her three fine children, son Dan Sennema and daughters Julie Sennema Tampa and Alice Sennema Lawrence, who have blessed their parents with three grandchildren, Grey, Daisy, and Harper Grace; and

Whereas, Marty Sennema spends her well-earned retirement from teaching elementary-school music in singing, playing the piano, reading, and doing volunteer work; and

Whereas, active members of Columbia's Shandon Presbyterian Church, Dave and Marty enjoy participating in church and community activities when at home, but they also love to travel to far-flung places around the globe and visit their children and grandchildren. Although they now have sold their postcard business, they still keep an eye on how their book, Columbia, South Carolina: A Postcard History, is doing on Amazon.com or Barnes & Noble; and

Whereas, on February 22, 2008, Dave and Marty will be honored by family and friends at a grand celebration of their fifty years of marriage, the event to be hosted by their children at the South Carolina State Museum; and

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the members of the House of Representatives express their congratulations to these two special South Carolinians on reaching the milestone of their golden wedding anniversary. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate David and Martha Sennema on the occasion of their fiftieth wedding anniversary and extend best wishes for many more years of blessing and fulfillment.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dave and Marty Sennema.
