A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND MR. ROY JOHNSON, OF SPARTANBURG, FOR HIS FIVE YEARS OF OUTSTANDING AND DEDICATED SERVICE AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE SPARTANBURG HOUSING AUTHORITY, AND TO WISH HIM MUCH SUCCESS AND FULFILLMENT IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Mr. Roy Johnson, of Spartanburg, for five years has carried out his duties as executive director of the Spartanburg Housing Authority (SHA) with diligence and excellence; and

Whereas, under Mr. Johnson's leadership, SHA has renovated or reconstructed most of its housing inventory to provide well-designed communities for its residents and the surrounding neighborhoods. During his time as executive director, the housing authority applied for, and received, a twenty-million-dollar 2004 HOPE VI award from HUD, which includes funding for the revitalization of six hundred sixty-two units in thirteen neighborhoods. This grant has leveraged more than one hundred ten million dollars of community activity; and

Whereas, Mr. Johnson also led the sixteen-million-dollar 2007 HOPE VI application concerning two sites on the Westside of Spartanburg, immediately outside the downtown business district. SHA will learn if it will receive the award for the 2007 application in late summer of 2008; and

Whereas, during his tenure, the housing authority has moved into the historic Mary H. Wright School and planned a full rehabilitation of the office site, which will include space for other nonprofit and government agencies. In addition, the Wright Center was listed in the National Register of Historic Places, due to Mr. Johnson's efforts in 2007; and

Whereas, on February 11, 2008, Roy Johnson will begin service as executive director of the Vancouver Housing Authority in Washington State, and the House of Representatives extends its congratulations to him as he takes on new responsibilities at this challenging post. On behalf of the people of Spartanburg, the House also wishes to express its gratitude to Mr. Johnson for his exemplary service to the people of that city during his time as executive director of the Spartanburg Housing Authority. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend Mr. Roy Johnson, of Spartanburg, for his five years of outstanding and dedicated service as executive director of the Spartanburg Housing Authority, and wish him much success and fulfillment in all his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Roy Johnson.
