A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR PASTOR MARJORIE ABRAHAM DENT FOR TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF SERVICE AS A MINISTER, AND TO COMMEND HER DEVOTION TO MINISTRY IN THE NEIGHBORING STATE OF GEORGIA, JAMAICA, AND ONTARIO, CANADA.

Whereas, born in Kingston, Jamaica, Marjorie Abraham attended nursing school in Essex, England, and then furthered her nursing studies at Thomas Nelson College in Hampton, Virginia, and at Clayton State University School of Nursing outside of Atlanta, Georgia; Marjorie was the first African American nurse to be named as head nurse at South Fulton Hospital in 1979; and

Whereas, she is married to retired Major Jesse A. Dent, and together they have raised five children and have nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; Marjorie Dent and her family have lived in College Park, Georgia, for thirty-one years; and

Whereas, in 1983, she answered her call to ministry and was the first woman to be licensed at her home church, Friendship Baptist Church in College Park, Georgia, and was installed as pastor of Mercy Missionary Faith Church in 1988; and

Whereas, in 1990, she was ordained at the First Missionary Baptist Church in College Park, Georgia, and received a master of divinity degree from the Interdenominational Theological Center and the Morehouse School of Religion, where she was chosen student of the year in 1993; and

Whereas, Reverend Dent has taken further study at Emory University in clinical pastoral education, and together the Dents founded Mercy Medical Health, a nonprofit ministry to the homebound elderly, their caregivers, youth and other underserved groups; and

Whereas, Reverend Dent's ministry extends from prisons to hospitals and has taken her throughout the United States and overseas, including works in Jamaica and Ontario, Canada; and

Whereas, contributing to the quality of life in her community, Reverend Dent served as a member of College Park Board of Zoning for eleven years, including service as its vice chair and chair, and as a volunteer chaplain for thirteen years at Southern Regional Medical Center in Riverdale, Georgia; and

Whereas, Reverend Dent served as director of the women's ministry for the west central district of the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship and has been an instructor at the Carter Theological Institute of Ministry; and

Whereas, in addition to her careers in nursing and ministry, she now has a career in business as the vice president of marketing and distribution for Dent Enterprises International, an e-commerce company, specializing in health and sports nutrition for the body, soul, and spirit; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives acknowledge the wisdom of Solomon when he said, "A woman who feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her in the gates" (Proverbs 31:30-31), so they are pleased to appreciate the accomplishments of Marjorie Abraham Dent. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Pastor Marjorie Abraham Dent for twenty-five years of service as a minister, and commend her devotion to ministry in the neighboring state of Georgia and in Jamaica and Ontario, Canada.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Pastor Marjorie Abraham Dent.
