A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE LIFE OF MARY LOIS SHIVERS, A CHERISHED CITIZEN OF RICHLAND COUNTY, UPON THE OCCASION OF HER EIGHTIETH BIRTHDAY, AND TO WISH HER MANY MORE YEARS OF PROSPERITY AND HAPPINESS.

Whereas, as the sweet Psalmist of Israel said, "The days of our years are threescore and ten, and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years" (Psalm 90:10); and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina are delighted to learn that Mrs. Mary Lois Shivers will celebrate fourscore years, her eightieth birthday, on March 1, 2008; and

Whereas, born in 1928 in Alabama, Mary became a high school beauty queen and now continues a quest to develop the hidden beauty "of the heart...which is in the sight of God of great price" (I Peter 3:4); and

Whereas, in 1946, she married her beloved Clark, who served in the military for over thirty years while they traveled over the United States and abroad and raised three fine children, the late Jimmy Shivers, the Reverend Frank Shivers, and Linda Shivers Bleckley; they enjoyed fifty-four years of marriage before his death in 2000; she has four grandchildren; and

Whereas, she graduated from Columbia Beauty School in 1963 and has been licensed as a beautician, as she says, not a magician, for forty-five years, and in September 1972 she opened her own shop where she still works two or three days a week; she also caters weddings, anniversaries, and parties; and

Whereas, she was a charter member of Temple Baptist Church and heads the Bereavement Committee to provide food for those who are grieving the loss of a loved one; she also serves with Helping Hands to raise funds for the enormous expenses of critically ill children through such activities as garage sales; and

Whereas, she chairs the senior citizens' group Temple Rays, helps with the Fall Festival for the children at the end of October, and has raised thousands of dollars for Camp Longridge, a Christian camp for children; and

Whereas, she helps in the regional Sheriff's office, was a charter member of the Citizens Academy sponsored by the Richland County Sheriff's Department, and has served as the chairperson for the Capital View area neighborhood in Eastview and a director for the Lower Richland Crime Alliance; and

Whereas, she visits a local nursing home regularly where she plans parties, ministers to various physical needs, and acts as a guardian for one of the residents; and

Whereas, a member of the Eastern Star for twenty-seven years, Mary also has been active in the Ruritans and still finds time for her girlfriends in the Red Hat Society; and

Whereas, Mary also has served her community in politics and helped to elect James "Bubba" Cromer to serve in district number eighty; they remain close friends still despite the fact that he calls her at 1:30 a.m. at the first sight of snow and despite the fact that she says the Lord blessed her with a good son, a bad son, and a crazy son, Bubba clearly qualifying as the latter; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly of South Carolina take great pleasure in rejoicing as Mary Lois Shivers attains fourscore years of devotion and duty to her family and neighbors, and they "arise up, and call her blessed" (Proverbs 31:28). Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Mary Lois Shivers, a cherished citizen of Richland County, upon the occasion of her eightieth birthday, and wish her many more years of prosperity and happiness.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mary Lois Shivers.
