A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE, CELEBRATE, AND COMMEND THE CAMDEN FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH UPON THE OCCASION OF ITS TENTH ANNIVERSARY AS A COMBINED CHURCH, AND TO WISH ITS FAITHFUL CONGREGATION AND PASTOR MANY MORE YEARS OF SERVICE TO GOD AND THEIR CHURCH.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina are pleased to reflect upon the celebration of two fine churches in Camden, Trinity and Macedonia United Methodist Churches, which ten years ago merged to form one congregation, Camden First United Methodist Church; and

Whereas, in the words of the sweet songwriter of Israel, "Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity...for there the Lord commanded the blessing, even life forevermore" (Psalm 133:1, 3); and

Whereas, in 1836, Frank Adamson deeded to the Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church of the United States the property on West Dekalb Street on which Trinity Methodist Church stood, and in April 1866 the first pastor, William Cole, was appointed; and

Whereas, when the church held its first annual conference in February 1869, the membership numbered one thousand three hundred twenty, the largest in the church's history; and

Whereas, in 1913, a prayer band formed among members and friends desiring a church in the Kirkwood section of Camden, from which grew the Macedonia Methodist Church of Camden; and

Whereas, after suffering a fire that partially destroyed Trinity Church in 1925, the Mather Academy and Mount Moriah Baptist Church gave permission for the Trinity congregation to use their buildings for worship until three years later when the new facility was completed after members had given financially and had labored and had even donated bricks for the structure; and

Whereas, during its history, the congregation, pastors, and community have made tremendous personal sacrifices to maintain this house of worship; one pastor even personally paying off the remaining debt on the property and another refusing his salary until the church debt for the mortgage was paid; and

Whereas, when Reverend James Gadsden served as pastor between 1960 and 1967, Macedonia and Trinity truly became sister churches when the pastor ministered in both churches under the newly formed Camden Charge; and

Whereas, the first female appointment, Reverend Cassandra P. Jackson, facilitated the physical merger of Trinity and Macedonia Churches creating in word and deed the Camden First United Methodist Church; and

Whereas, Reverend Otis Scott, Jr., has now served for seven years as the second pastor of the newly united church and will oversee the festivities for the tenth anniversary weekend culminating with the Sunday morning worship service; and

Whereas, under his leadership this church and its faithful congregation have undertaken a host of community outreach and uplift endeavors, each one in the great Methodist tradition of both faith and works; and

Whereas, the Camden First United Methodist is the first church to be designated as a protected property under the Camden Historic Landmark Commission, and in response, a massive restoration has been completed returning the building to its original state; and

Whereas, it is appropriate for the members of the General Assembly to pause in their deliberations so that they also may note and rejoice in the celebration of ten years of Camden First United Methodist Church as a joint congregation. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize, celebrate, and commend the Camden First United Methodist Church upon the occasion of its tenth anniversary as a combined church, and wish for its faithful congregation and pastor many more years of service to God and their church.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Reverend Otis Scott, Jr., Minister of Camden First United Methodist Church.
