A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO HONOR CARSON COX, OF HORRY COUNTY, FOR HIS OUTSTANDING RECORD OF VOLUNTEER SERVICE, PEER LEADERSHIP, AND COMMUNITY SPIRIT, AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM ON BEING NAMED WINNER OF A 2008 PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARD.

Whereas, Carson Cox, an eighth-grade student at Myrtle Beach Middle School and resident of Horry County, has been honored by Prudential Financial with a 2008 Prudential Spirit of Community Award for his exceptional record of volunteer service; and

Whereas, America's largest youth-recognition program based exclusively on volunteerism, the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program has honored Carson as one of the top two youth volunteers in South Carolina for 2008; and

Whereas, nominated by his school, Carson earned this award by spearheading the remodeling and refurbishing of an outdated kitchen at Friendship House, a preschool for disadvantaged children. Already a volunteer at the school when he conceived the idea, Carson felt it was important to ensure a clean and healthy environment for the children, staff, and volunteers of Friendship House; and

Whereas, he developed a master plan, made a list of potential contributors and volunteers, and followed up by writing letters and visiting local businesses to solicit help with his project. With supplies and helpers in place, Carson and his volunteers installed a new custom island, cleaned cabinets and countertops, painted walls, fixed the stove, and waxed the floor, all in just two weeks over Christmas vacation; and

Whereas, when renovation work was finished, Carson purchased a new microwave, pots, pans, and utensils for the kitchen to complete the gift; and

Whereas, an Eagle Scout and a young man with wisdom beyond his years, Carson believes that the good you do for others will come back to you tenfold later in your life if you give from your heart; and

Whereas, as a Prudential state-level winner, Carson will receive a one thousand dollar award, an engraved silver medallion, and a trip to Washington, D.C., May 3-6, 2008, for various recognition events, including the naming of ten national honorees, who will receive additional awards of five thousand dollars, gold medallions, crystal trophies, and grants of five thousand dollars from Prudential Foundation for charitable organizations of their choice; and

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the House of Representatives recognizes individuals who are committed to giving their time and energy to community service. Carson Cox exemplifies that dedicated spirit, and the members join Carson's family and friends in celebrating his Prudential Spirit of Community Award and in wishing him well at the national competition. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, honor Carson Cox, of Horry County, for his outstanding record of volunteer service, peer leadership, and community spirit, and congratulate him on being named winner of a 2008 Prudential Spirit of Community Award.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Carson Cox.
