A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE MEMBERS OF THE WANDO HIGH SCHOOL CONCERT BAND, OF CHARLESTON COUNTY, AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR WINNING THE COVETED SUDLER FLAG OF HONOR FOR THE YEAR 2007 FROM THE JOHN PHILIP SOUSA FOUNDATION.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are pleased to learn that the concert band of Wando High School has earned the prized Sudler Flag of Honor for 2007 in recognition of outstanding musical excellence; and

Whereas, only two high school concert bands received this international honor during 2007, and only fifty-one bands in the entire United States, Canada, and Japan have received the award during the twenty-five years that the Sudler Flag program has existed; and

Whereas, the purpose of the award is to identify, recognize, and honor high school band programs at the international level that have demonstrated particularly high standards of excellence in concert activities over a period of several years; and

Whereas, as the highest recognition of excellence in a concert performance awarded to a high school band, the Sudler Flag of Honor is designed in red, white, and blue and carries the logo of the John Philip Sousa Foundation, and it becomes the property of the recognized school; and

Whereas, the concert band of Wando High School was chosen on the basis of years of competition at regional and state levels where it received superior evaluations, along with other specified criteria for the school's entire band program; and

Whereas, using his own musical talents and experience, Scott Rush, the band conductor at Wando High School, has produced a concert band consistently worthy of international notoriety through hours of arduous work in demanding practices to refine skills, techniques, and performance; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly express their pleasure in the excellence that has garnered recognition for the concert band of Wando High School and in the pride it has brought to its school and community. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor the members of the Wando High School Concert Band, of Charleston County, and congratulate them for winning the coveted Sudler Flag of Honor for the year 2007 from the John Philip Sousa Foundation.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Principal Lucy G. Beckham and Conductor Scott Rush.
