A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR ROBERT CLINTON "BOBBY" RICHARDSON FOR HIS IMPRESSIVE CAREER IN BASEBALL, AND TO EXPRESS PROFOUND GRATITUDE AS HE MINISTERS TO YOUTH IN SOUTH CAROLINA AND IN THE WORLD ABROAD, AS HE SERVES AS AN AMBASSADOR FOR OUR FINE STATE.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are pleased to learn that Robert Clinton "Bobby" Richardson will have a special outreach to children in a homeless shelter and will speak at the annual fund-raising dinner on May 3, 2008, for the Salvation Army in Alexandria, Virginia; and

Whereas, born in Sumter on August 19, 1935, Bobby Richardson formed his love of baseball when he was ten while playing on a baseball team sponsored by the Salvation Army; and

Whereas, he became the second baseman for the New York Yankees from 1955 to 1966 and helped the Yankees maintain their championship dynasty during that time; and

Whereas, in 1963, Bobby Richardson received the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award for players who best exemplify the character and integrity of Lou Gehrig both on and off the field; and

Whereas, at his retirement ceremony at Yankee Stadium, the Salvation Army presented him with the coveted Red Shield Award for his service to the community; and

Whereas, many youngster growing up in South Carolina after his retirement fondly remember the privilege of attending the Bobby Richardson Baseball Camp, where they learned not only the fundamentals of America's pastime but also the honor with which the game should be played; and

Whereas, as Coach Richardson, he served as the head baseball coach of the University of South Carolina and took the team to its first college World Series; and

Whereas, he also served as the head coach for the Coastal Carolina University baseball team and for Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia; and

Whereas, Mr. Richardson is a seven-time All-Star, five-time Gold Glove Winner, and three-time World Champion, and he won the 1960 World Series Most Valuable Player even though his team lost the series that year; and

Whereas, the national spokesman for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and a member of their Hall of Champions, Bobby Richardson is a committed Christian who has lived his life according to the words of John 1:12, which says, "As many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name"; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly express their appreciation to Robert Clinton "Bobby" Richardson for his support of the Salvation Army over many years, for his service to the citizens of our fine State, and for the manner in which he represents this State to the world at large. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor Robert Clinton "Bobby" Richardson for his impressive career in baseball, and express profound gratitude as he ministers to youth in South Carolina and in the world abroad and serves as an ambassador for our fine State.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Robert Clinton "Bobby" Richardson.
