A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE REVEREND WALLACE HUGHES FOR HIS FORTY-NINE YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE AS A PASTOR AND FOR HIS COMMITTED COMMUNITY SERVICE.

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the House of Representatives honors those individuals who give tirelessly of themselves to succor the souls of men; and

Whereas, the Reverend Wallace Hughes, interim pastor of First Baptist Church of Landrum and retired director of associational missions for the Abbeville Baptist Association in Greenwood, stands among their number as an outstanding minister of the Gospel, one much admired in his roles as pastor, teacher, preacher, and missionary for forty-nine years; and

Whereas, adding a degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, to his earlier degree from Greenville's Furman University, the young Easley-born Wallace Hughes prepared himself for the Gospel ministry, into which he was ordained in 1959; and

Whereas, only twenty-two years of age at ordination, Pastor Hughes began his post-seminary ministry as pastor of South Side Baptist Mission (now South Side Baptist Church in Camden), followed by service as pastor of Pendleton's Welcome Baptist Church, Greer's Abner Creek Baptist Church, and, from 1976 to 1983, Columbia's Eau Claire Baptist Church. While serving at Eau Claire, he led his congregation in launching Irmo's Gateway Baptist Church as a church-style mission. For three years, Pastor Hughes shepherded both congregations until a full-time pastor took up his duties at Gateway, which now has grown into one of the largest churches in the Midlands; and

Whereas, from 1983 to 2001, Pastor Hughes served his God as director of missions for the Abbeville Baptist Association (now Lakelands) in Greenwood, from which post he retired; and

Whereas, among his many posts of denominational leadership, Pastor Hughes has served as president of Pastors Conference in Camden, Greer, and Columbia, board member of the South Carolina Baptist Convention, and president of the South Carolina Baptist Directors of Missions Fellowship. Since his retirement as director of missions, he has aided three churches in their need for an interim pastor; and

Whereas, throughout his career, whether serving as pastor of a local church or as an associational administrator, Pastor Hughes has set the example for other Christian believers in his dedication to missions. Acting sometimes as team leader, sometimes as team member, and often sponsoring other members, he has carried the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ over the years to such far-flung locales as Jamaica, Brazil, and Kenya. His preaching ministry has called him to many states in this country, as well as to these pulpits abroad; and

Whereas, in addition to his and his wife's personal assistance to those in need, Pastor Hughes has blessed Greenwood and Abbeville counties in numerous ways, such as his leadership in establishing, and teaching in, the Lakelands Baptist Association's Conversational English Ministry to internationals, his help in beginning the Hispanic Ministry, and his leadership in organizing and equipping the Disaster Relief Ministry; and

Whereas, Pastor Hughes considers one of his crowning achievements as having had the good sense to marry his beloved Donnie, for almost fifty-one years his wife and life partner, and with her to raise two beautiful daughters, Cynthia and Sheri, the Lord multiplying the family's joy upon the addition of two grandchildren, Taylor and Hailey; and

Whereas, noted as a man of Christian standards and character, this servant of God strives to manifest Jesus Christ as Lord and to strengthen and renew the Body of Christ in his ministry. "Well done, good and faithful servant" truly expresses the dedicated quality of his life's work. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Reverend Wallace Hughes for his forty-nine years of dedicated service as a pastor and for his committed community service.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Pastor Hughes.
