A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE DR. DIANE HULETT, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF ENGLISH AT MORRIS COLLEGE IN SUMTER COUNTY, ON BEING NAMED A 2008 RECIPIENT OF THE EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AWARD BY SOUTH CAROLINA INDEPENDENT COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES, INC.

Whereas, the House of Representatives is pleased to note that Dr. Diane Hulett, assistant professor of English at Morris College, has been named a recipient of a 2008 Excellence in Teaching Award by South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities, Inc. (SCICU); and

Whereas, created by SCICU to honor those faculty members who "demonstrate the highest standards of teaching methods that encourage students to strive for excellence in their studies and pursuits," the award is given to one faculty member at each of SCICU's twenty member colleges and universities, with each recipient chosen by his own institution according to rigorous criteria; and

Whereas, a native of Lexington, Kentucky, Dr. Hulett followed her family's commitment to teaching when she joined the Morris College faculty in 2001 after receiving her doctorate in English from the University of Kentucky; and

Whereas, challenged by Dr. Luns C. Richardson, Morris College president, to prepare a manual to help all students with their writing skills, Dr. Hulett co-authored Standards for Writing at Morris College in 2004. She later helped Morris College achieve national recognition when she wrote the Secondary English Specialty Program Area Report for the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education; and

Whereas, from 2003 to 2007, Dr, Hulett served as Title III Activity Director for Faculty Development at Morris College, conducting and facilitating workshops on writing, research, technology, and classroom management. In addition, she provided invaluable service on the Academic Policy Committee and the Committee for Planning and Assessment and as an academic advisor to English, secondary English, and general studies students; and

Whereas, in recognition of her exemplary work, Morris College honored Dr. Hulett as its 2008 Professor of the Year; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives takes pride in recognizing outstanding South Carolina educators such as Dr. Diane Hulett, and the members join with her friends and family in congratulating her upon joining the elite group of university and college faculty members who have earned SCICU's coveted Excellence in Teaching Award. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Dr. Diane Hulett, assistant professor of English at Morris College in Sumter County, on being named a 2008 recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award by South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities, Inc.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Diane Hulett.
