A HOUSE RESOLUTION

HONORING AND THANKING REVEREND DONNIE MCBRIDE AND THE PARISHIONERS OF ST. JOHN AME CHURCH IN MARION FOR HOSTING THE 117TH SESSION OF THE NORTHEAST ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE SEVENTH EPISCOPAL DISTRICT OF THE AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH.

Whereas, the mission of the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME Church) is to minister to the spiritual, intellectual, physical, emotional, and environmental needs of all people by spreading Christ's liberating gospel through word and deed; and

Whereas, the AME Church is dedicated to seeking out and saving the lost and serves the needy through a continuing program of preaching the gospel, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, housing the homeless, cheering the fallen, providing jobs for the jobless, and encouraging thrift and economic advancement. Further, the church is committed to ministering to the needs of those in prisons, hospitals, nursing homes, asylums, mental institutions, and senior citizens' homes, as well as caring for the sick, the shut-in, and the mentally and socially disturbed; and

Whereas, the AME Church has a unique and glorious history. It was the first major religious denomination in the Western World that had its origin in sociological and theological beliefs and differences. The AME Church grew out of the Free African Society, which Richard Allen, Absalom Jones, and others established in Philadelphia in 1787; and

Whereas, the church's roots are the family of the Methodist churches. Methodism provides an orderly system of rules and regulations and places emphasis on a plain and simple gospel. Episcopal refers to the form of government under which the church operates; and

Whereas, led by Reverend Donnie McBride, St. John AME Church of Marion will host the 117th Session of the Northeast Annual Conference of the Seventh Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church August 25 through 29, 2008. The District consists of three Districts: Marion District, Sumter District, and Florence/Dillon District; and

Whereas, each year the annual conference is held at a different church to transact the business of the conference; gather together all of the ministry groups for fellowship; appoint, reappoint, and ordain ministers; and make plans for the upcoming year; and

Whereas, this year the Right Reverend Preston Warren Williams II, Presiding Bishop, will be presiding over the conference. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, honor and thank Reverend Donnie McBride and the parishioners of St. John AME Church in Marion for hosting the 117th Session of the Northeast Annual Conference of the Seventh Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Reverend Donnie McBride and the parishioners of St. John AME Church.
