A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE REVEREND DR. BENJAMIN D. SNODDY, OF SPARTANBURG COUNTY, ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RECENT ELECTION TO THE PRESIDENCY OF THE BAPTIST EDUCATIONAL & MISSIONARY CONVENTION OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, on May 8, 2008, the Reverend Dr. Benjamin D. Snoddy became the newly elected president of the Baptist Educational & Missionary Convention of South Carolina; and

Whereas, a native of Spartanburg County, Reverend Snoddy was born the third child of Cornell and Geneva Snoddy and, in preparation for his life's work, graduated from Claflin University in Orangeburg and Morehouse School of Religion at the Interdenominational Theological Center of Atlanta, Georgia. Further study followed in the doctoral program at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois; and

Whereas, ordained in 1967 to the Gospel ministry, Reverend Snoddy served as pastor of Norway's Bushy Pond Baptist Church and Blackville's Tabernacle Baptist Church. He was also a clinical chaplain for the South Carolina Department of Corrections and an instructor at Morris College's School of Religion in Sumter, as well as at Rutledge College in Spartanburg; and

Whereas, a man who gives generously of his time and energy to public service, he is a member of a number of boards and organizations, among them the South Carolina State Technical Systems Board of Directors, the BB&T Advisory Board of Spartanburg, the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education Board, and the Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina Executive Board; and

Whereas, he has served as chairman of commissioners for Spartanburg Technical College for seven years, and in appreciation for his commitment and visionary leadership, the Spartanburg Technical College Board of Commissioners named the college's board room in his honor, and a ten thousand-dollar scholarship was endowed in his name; and

Whereas, in 1992, Reverend Snoddy received an honorary doctor of divinity from Morris College, and in 2005, Governor Mark Sanford honored him with the Order of the Palmetto, the highest civilian award given by the State of South Carolina; and

Whereas, currently senior pastor of Spartanburg's Mount Moriah Baptist Church, where he has served for thirty-two years, he is married to the former Sheila Harvin. The Snoddys have two daughters, Angela and Stephanie, and one granddaughter, Kristen; and

Whereas, as a deeply committed servant of Jesus Christ dedicated to building up the Church and impacting his community for good in the name of Christ, Reverend Snoddy has long demonstrated a dedication to his calling equal to the eminence of the new office to which he has been elected. The members of the House take great pleasure in congratulating him on this, his most recent honor. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate the Reverend Dr. Benjamin D. Snoddy, of Spartanburg County, on the occasion of his recent election to the presidency of the Baptist Educational & Missionary Convention of South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Reverend Snoddy.
