A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND DR. LIAM FOX, MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT, FOR HIS TRULY DISTINGUISHED CAREER AS A MEMBER OF THE HOUSE OF COMMONS AND IN THE FIELD OF MEDICINE, AND TO RECOGNIZE HIS DEDICATION TO THE CITIZENS OF WOODSPRING AND THE UNITED KINGDOM FOR HIS EFFORTS TO STRENGTHEN THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE UNITED KINGDOM AND THE UNITED STATES.

Whereas, Dr. Liam Fox, MP was born in 1961. He was educated at St Bride's High School, East Kilbride and University of Glasgow where he studied medicine. At the university, he was known as a keen debater, and won national and international awards for his efforts; and

Whereas, Dr. Fox has had a distinguished career as a physician and is a member of the Royal College of General Practitioners. He served as a Civilian Army Medical Officer and also worked in the voluntary sector as a divisional surgeon for St. John's before working as a general practitioner in Buckinghamshire and Somerset; and

Whereas, Dr. Fox was first elected to the House of Commons in 1992. He has served with distinction as Parliamentary Private Secretary to The Right Honorable Michael Howard, QC, MP, then as Home Secretary. In July 1994, he was appointed Assistant Government Whip, and then promoted to the position of Senior Government Whip in 1995. He also served as a Minister at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office from 1996 until the 1997 General Election; and

Whereas, Dr. Fox, through diligence, astute political erudition, and integrity held numerous leadership positions throughout his career in the House of Commons and has served as Opposition Front Bench Spokesman on Constitutional Affairs, and from May 1999 to November 2003, he served as Shadow Secretary of State for Health before being appointed Co-Chairman of the Party in 2003. Subsequently, from May 2005 to December 2005, Dr. Fox served as Shadow Foreign Secretary; and

Whereas, Dr. Fox is known as a leader amongst the members of Parliament and the Conservative Party. Currently, he is serving as the Shadow Secretary of State for Defense; and

Whereas, as a leader in the Conservative Party and a strong believer in the conservative principals instilled by The Right Honorable The Baroness Margaret Thatcher, LG, OM, PC, FRS, Dr. Fox founded the Atlantic Bridge, a non-profit organization devoted to maintaining the close and special relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States; and

Whereas, in 2005, Dr. Fox married the former Dr. Jesme Baird. Dr. Jesme Fox serves as a cancer specialist, co-chair of the United Kingdom Lung Cancer Coalition, and Director of Patient Care at the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, commend the distinguished career of Dr. Fox and his leadership, his devotion to maintaining the strong and mutual relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States, and wish him the best of luck to him in all his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Liam Fox, MP.
