TO COMMEMORATE THE TWO HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF THOMAS GREEN CLEMSON, BORN IN PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ON JULY 1, 1807.

Whereas, the year 2007 marks the two hundredth anniversary of the birth of Thomas Green Clemson, one of South Carolina's most distinguished and accomplished adoptive sons; and

Whereas, after completing scientific study at the Sorbonne in France, Clemson was awarded the degree of assayer of mines from the French Royal Mint in Paris in 1831, thereafter spending much of his career as a mining engineer; and

Whereas, in 1838, he married Anna Maria Calhoun at the Fort Hill plantation, home of Anna Maria's father, the Honorable John C. Calhoun; and

Whereas, Clemson was appointed charge d'affaires to Belgium in 1844 and served with distinction as an ambassador for the United States under four presidents as a diplomat to the court of King Leopold I; and

Whereas, accepting another political appointment in 1860, Clemson became Superintendent of Agricultural Affairs for the United States and earned recognition as the first acting Secretary of Agriculture; and

Whereas, elected president of the Pendleton Farmers Society in 1868, Clemson began a movement for the establishment of an agricultural and scientific college for South Carolina; and

Whereas, setting that dream into motion, Clemson provided for the bequest of the Fort Hill estate to South Carolina in his Last Will and Testament, signed November 6, 1886; and

Whereas, his death on April 6, 1888, set in motion the creation of the Clemson Agricultural College of South Carolina; and

Whereas, Thomas Green Clemson authored the vision and purpose that to this day shape and inspire his namesake, Clemson University, in the fulfillment of its covenant with the People of South Carolina to be a land-grant institution that is one of the nation's finest public universities; and

Whereas, over one hundred years later, Clemson University continues to provide educational and student enrichment opportunities that create globally competitive leaders, thinkers, and entrepreneurs, who solve real world problems and contribute to the economic development and social advancement of this State and Nation. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commemorate the two hundredth anniversary of the birth of Thomas Green Clemson, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on July 1, 1807.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Clemson University President, James F. Barker.
