VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND THE REVEREND H. L. SIMMONS OF ORANGEBURG COUNTY ON HIS MINISTRY TO THE HOMELESS AND ON THE OCCASION OF THE FIFTEENTH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS FOUNDING THE POWER HOUSE OF DELIVERANCE HOMELESS SHELTER IN ORANGEBURG COUNTY.
Whereas, in 1992, The Reverend H. L. Simmons followed the Will of God and founded the Power House Deliverance Homeless Shelter in Orangeburg County, which is believed to be the first black homeless shelter in the United States; and
Whereas, since its founding, the Power House Deliverance Homeless Shelter and Reverend Simmons have exhibited a selfless commitment to addressing the needs of all of God's children from every walk of life, and in particular, providing the homeless and unemployed with food, shelter, and job training, and help in securing steady employment and affordable housing; and
Whereas, Reverend Simmons and his shelter have tirelessly worked to help the homeless and unemployed bridge the wide gap between poverty and stability by efficiently using the limited resources available through grants and funding from state and federal government sources, churches, philanthropic organizations, and individual citizens; and
Whereas, they have rallied community support that is crucial to the success of their mission, including monetary donations but also generous gifts of food and meals by local restaurants and grocery stores; and
Whereas, Reverend Simmons and his shelter admirably and humbly strive to uplift the homeless among us by giving them hope for better lives. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and commend The Reverend H. L. Simmons of Orangeburg County on his ministry to the homeless and on the occasion of the fifteenth anniversary of his founding the Power House of Deliverance Homeless Shelter in Orangeburg County.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to The Reverend H. L. Simmons.
