A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE MRS. THELMA CELESTIA GROOMS SHULER, "MS. THELMA", OF HOLLY HILL ON THE REMARKABLE OCCASION OF HER ONE HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY AND TO WISH HER CONTINUED GOOD HEALTH AND MUCH HAPPINESS IN THE YEARS TO COME.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate were very pleased to learn that Mrs. Thelma Celestia Grooms Shuler, "Ms. Thelma", as she is affectionately known to many, celebrated her one hundredth birthday on March 1, 2007; and

Whereas, the members of the Senate are honored to recognize this very special day on which Ms. Thelma, surrounded by family, friends, and community leaders, celebrated one hundred years of a very full and wonderful life; and

Whereas, Ms. Thelma was born on March 1, 2007, just after the dawning of the twentieth century, and as this century has brought incredible changes and developments to South Carolina, Thelma Shuler has been there to witness them all; and

Whereas, Ms. Thelma was born to Thomas Pate Grooms and Mary Rulaney Austin Grooms in the rural crossroads community of Lagare in Berkeley County, which later was known as Cross. She graduated from Summerville High School and went on to Winthrop College where she was a member of the Class of 1927; and

Whereas, she was married to the late Thomas Gregg Shuler, and to this blessed union were born two daughters, Kathryn Murray Whetsell and Helen Henry Simmons. Ms Thelma is the beloved grandmother of six, great-grandmother of seven, and great-great grandmother of four, the true matriarch of this loving family, who is cherished by all; and

Whereas, Ms. Thelma was a trailblazer in her day, having opened the first lunch room at Holly Hill High School in the early 1930's, where meals, which initially were free, only cost student two cents a day; she later operated a country store, worked for Santee Cooper, and was a teletype operator at Bulls Drugstore; and

Whereas, she has lived her life freely sharing her time and many talents in service to others, and Holly Hill United Methodist Church, where she has been a long-standing, loyal, and faithful member, is proud to have her as their oldest member; and

Whereas, Thelma Celestia Grooms Shuler is known and admired for her devotion to her family, hard work, and generosity. She is the backbone of her family and a beacon of strength and dignity in the community, greatly respected and beloved by all who know her; and

Whereas, it is proper and fitting for the members of the South Carolina Senate to pause in their deliberations to honor and congratulate such an outstanding daughter of the Palmetto State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize Mrs. Thelma Celestia Grooms Shuler, "Ms. Thelma", of Holly Hill on the remarkable occasion of her one hundredth birthday and wish her continued good health and much happiness in the years to come.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Mrs. Thelma Celestia Grooms Shuler.
