A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

REQUESTING THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES TO AGGRESSIVELY ENCOURAGE THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS' AFFAIRS TO CREATE THE ALLEN BENNETT VETERANS' HOSPITAL IN GREENVILLE COUNTY TO PROVIDE MEDICAL CARE TO VETERANS LIVING IN THE UPSTATE REGION OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, veterans' hospitals serve a vital role in providing health care for the people who defended the United States during war time as a member of our great nation's armed forces; and

Whereas, over 55,000 United States veterans currently reside in the Upstate region of the Palmetto State, and in the past, the region was home to more veterans per capita than any other region in the country; and

Whereas, community leaders tirelessly have engaged in a yearlong effort to convert the vacant Allen Bennett Memorial Hospital facility into a veterans' hospital; and

Whereas, converting Allen Bennett Memorial Hospital into a veterans' hospital would tremendously benefit veterans residing in the Upstate by providing more convenient access to medical care and would provide a logical use for the vacant Allen Bennett Hospital; and

Whereas, the decision to convert Allen Bennett Memorial hospital into a veterans' hospital rests in the hands of the federal government, subject to the approval of the Greenville Hospital System Board of Trustees. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the United States Congress, and in particular the members of the South Carolina Congressional delegation, aggressively encourage the United States Department of Veterans' Affairs to create the Allen Bennett Veterans' Hospital in Greenville County to provide medical care to veterans living in the Upstate region of South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the United States Senate, the United States House of Representatives, and to each member of the South Carolina delegation.
