A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR JOHN R. STILLWAGON, SR., OF HORRY COUNTY, CHAMPION CLAY TARGET SHOOTER, FOR HIS MANY YEARS OF RECORD-SETTING ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN THE VENERABLE SPORT OF TRAPSHOOTING.

Whereas, John R. Stillwagon, Sr., of Horry County, champion clay target shooter, for many years has maintained a state and national record-setting reputation among sportsmen; and

Whereas, since 1971, when he began shooting trap competitively, Mr. Stillwagon has accumulated more than one hundred titles, state championships, and zone titles; and

Whereas, at the Grand American National Championship, he tied for first place nine times, six times racking up perfect scores of 200 x 200. Adding further to his roster of spectacular wins, in 1992 he captured first place in the Ducks Unlimited combined trap and sporting clays event; and

Whereas, for his twenty-one years of residency in South Carolina, he owns the highest combined average. Mr. Stillwagon has won the state singles championship eight times and in 1993 set a record as the first person to win both the South Carolina and North Carolina state singles championships with a perfect 400 x 400; and

Whereas, in 2002, John R. Stillwagon's 100 x 100 helped lead the squad that tied the world record score of 499 x 500. During that same year, competing in the national championship's "Champion of Champions" race, Mr. Stillwagon tied for first place with a perfect 100 x100, finishing third in the nation; and

Whereas, for more than sixteen years, he maintained an incredible ninety-eight-plus average and was the first shooter in South Carolina trapshooting history to earn the AAA 27 AAA classification, trapshooting's highest designation; and

Whereas, John R. Stillwagon's skills and accomplishments as a trapshooter have not gone unrewarded, for he has received the National Rifle Association's Distinguished Shotgun Award, captained the South Carolina All-State team multiple times, appeared on television to discuss his sport, and in 1997 was inducted into the South Carolina Trapshooting Hall of Fame; and

Whereas, dedicated to spreading enjoyment of trapshooting and South Carolina sports in general, he has spent countless hours introducing interested men, women, and children to trapshooting, often generously offering his own equipment and accessories to help make their experiences more pleasurable. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize and honor John R. Stillwagon, Sr., of Horry County, champion clay target shooter, for his many years of record-setting accomplishments in the venerable sport of trapshooting.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to John R. Stillwagon, Sr.
