TO RECOGNIZE THE REVEREND JOHN H. GILLISON, PRESIDING ELDER OF THE AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH'S SOUTH CAROLINA ANNUAL CONFERENCE FOR THE EDISTO DISTRICT, AND TO CELEBRATE HIS FIFTY YEARS OF MINISTRY IN THE AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH (AME).

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the South Carolina Senate honors those individuals who give tirelessly of themselves to succor the souls of men; and

Whereas, the Reverend John H. Gillison, presiding elder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church's South Carolina Annual Conference for the Edisto District, stands among their number as an outstanding minister of the Gospel, one much admired in his roles as pastor, elder, and college professor over the years; and

Whereas, after graduation from Allen University and Turner Theological Seminary at the Interdenominational Theological Center, the young Gillison furthered his education at Emory University and the University of South Carolina; and

Whereas, he has served as pastor of the Piney Grove-St. Paul Circuit of the Columbia Conference, as well as Chapelle Memorial AME Church in Columbia, Mt. Pisgah AME Church in Sumter, and the historic "Mother" Emanuel AME Church in Charleston; and

Whereas, in 1978, Reverend Gillison was elected the first black chairperson of the South Carolina Christian Action Council. During the course of his career, he also has taught at Allen University in Columbia, served as a delegate to the World Methodist Council in Nairobi, Kenya, and traveled extensively throughout western and southern Africa, Western Europe, the Pacific Islands, and South America; and

Whereas, he and his beloved wife, Jean Waymer-Gillison, consider raising two beautiful daughters, Gloria and Alfreda, not the least of their accomplishments before their Lord; and

Whereas, noted as a man of Christian standards and character, this servant of God strives to manifest Jesus Christ as Lord and to strengthen and renew the Body of Christ in his ministry. "Well done, good and faithful servant" truly expresses the dedicated quality of his life's work, which will be celebrated in ceremonies to be held at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston on January 25, 2008.
