TO RECOGNIZE EASTOVER'S SAINT PHILLIP A.M.E. CHURCH ON THE OCCASION OF ITS HISTORIC ONE HUNDRED SEVENTY-THIRD ANNIVERSARY AND TO COMMEND THE CHURCH FOR ALMOST TWO CENTURIES OF SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY.
Whereas, having been founded in the eighteen thirties, Eastover's Saint Phillip A.M.E. Church is celebrating its historic one hundred seventy-third anniversary in 2008; and
Whereas, for some time in the church's early days, worship took place under a "bush arbor," the congregation in 1835 moving to a newly built sanctuary that was then given the church's present name, Saint Phillip A.M.E.; and
Whereas, as the church grew and continued to build and improve its campus, its early pastors and members held on to their God with a steadfast and unmovable faith, looking to the future and secure in the Lord's love for them; and
Whereas, in 1981, about six months after the tragic loss of its sanctuary to fire, the church had the joy of dedicating a new sanctuary and educational complex to the glory of God; and
Whereas, standing on the faith and strength of its early pastors and members, Saint Phillip A.M.E. Church's present congregation "press[es] toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus," continuing to preach and teach the Word of God and spreading the gospel; and
Whereas, Saint Phillip A.M.E. Church has been a beacon of light in its community for more than one hundred seventy years, and, God willing, will continue its godly heritage in many more years of worship and service. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize Eastover's Saint Phillip A.M.E. Church on the occasion of its historic one hundred seventy-third anniversary and commend the church for almost two centuries of service to the community.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Saint Phillip A.M.E. Church.
