INVITATIONS AND MEMORIAL RESOLUTIONS

To whom was referred a Concurrent Resolution (H. 3004) to request that the Department of Transportation name the interchange located at Exit 16 along Interstate Highway 385 in Laurens County the "Sergeant Rick Pope Interchange", etc., respectfully

REPORT:

That they have duly and carefully considered the same and recommend that the same do pass:

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME THE INTERCHANGE LOCATED AT EXIT 16 ALONG INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 385 IN LAURENS COUNTY THE "SERGEANT RICK POPE INTERCHANGE" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS AT THIS INTERCHANGE THAT CONTAIN THE WORDS "SERGEANT RICK POPE INTERCHANGE".

Whereas, Sergeant Carlton Patrick "Rick" Pope was born on July 1, 1967, was married to the former Angela Wilson, and were blessed by the birth of their son, Austin; and

Whereas, he was a graduate of J. L. Mann High School in Greenville County. After graduating from high school, he entered the United States Navy at the age of eighteen and served his country with distinction until he was discharged in 1990; and

Whereas, in 1993 Rick joined the Fountain Inn Police Department and was promoted to the rank of Patrol Sergeant in 1994. He received numerous commendations from numerous police and fire departments as well as crime victims for his work in the field of law enforcement until he lost his life in a tragic car accident in October, 1996, at Exit 16 along Interstate Highway 385 in Laurens County; and

Whereas, it is fitting and proper for the members of the General Assembly to honor Sergeant Pope's memory by naming the interchange located at Exit 16 along Interstate Highway 385 in Laurens County the "Sergeant Rick Pope Interchange". Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, request that the Department of Transportation name the interchange located at Exit 16 along Interstate Highway 385 in Laurens County the "Sergeant Rick Pope Interchange" and erect appropriate markers or signs at this interchange that contain the words "Sergeant Rick Pope Interchange".

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
