INVITATIONS AND MEMORIAL RESOLUTIONS

To whom was referred a Concurrent Resolution (H. 3552) to request that the Department of Transportation name the portion of South Carolina Highway 57 in Dillon County from its intersection with United States Highway 9, etc., respectfully

That they have duly and carefully considered the same and recommend that the same do pass:

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME THE PORTION OF SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAY 57 IN DILLON COUNTY FROM ITS INTERSECTION WITH UNITED STATES HIGHWAY 9 IN THE TOWN OF LITTLE ROCK TO ITS INTERSECTION WITH SECONDARY HIGHWAY S-17-192 "REPRESENTATIVE JEWELL P. MCLAURIN, JR. HIGHWAY" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS ALONG THIS HIGHWAY THAT CONTAIN THE WORDS "REPRESENTATIVE JEWELL P. MCLAURIN, JR. HIGHWAY".

Whereas, the Honorable Jewell Pierce McLaurin, Jr., was born in Dillon County on February 25, 1916, the son of the late Jewell Pierce McLaurin, Sr., and Kate Braddy McLaurin. He died on April 11, 1997, in Dillon County at the age of eighty-one; and

Whereas, he was the grandson of Duncan McLaurin who was the City of Dillon's first mayor, postmaster, and chairman of the school board; and

Whereas, Mr. McLaurin was married to Julia Lane Wallace McLaurin of Dillon County, and was the father of one son and two daughters; and

Whereas, he attended Davidson College from 1935 to 1936 and was an Air Force veteran of World War II, having served in Europe from 1942 to 1945; and

Whereas, after World War II, Mr. McLaurin returned to his hometown of Dillon where he became a farmer, landowner, public servant, and land developer; and

Whereas, he was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Men's Bible Class; and

Whereas, he was a four-term member of the Dillon City Council, Dillon County Magistrate, Probation Officer for Dillon and Marlboro Counties, and member of the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1953 until 1963; and

Whereas, it is fitting to pay tribute to this distinguished son of South Carolina by having a portion of highway in his native Dillon County named in his honor. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, request that the Department of Transportation name the portion of South Carolina Highway 57 in Dillon County from its intersection with United States Highway 9 in the Town of Little Rock to its intersection with secondary highway S17-192 "Representative Jewell P. McLaurin, Jr. Highway" and erect appropriate markers or signs along this highway that contain the words "Representative Jewell P. McLaurin, Jr. Highway".

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
