TO COMMEND EDITH L. CUNNINGHAM, OF RICHLAND COUNTY, FOR HER OUTSTANDING SERVICE AT BELLSOUTH UPON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT, AND TO WISH HER MUCH SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS IN ALL HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly note that, after thirty-four years of service to BellSouth in varying capacities, Edith L. Cunningham is retiring from the position of Maintenance Administrator; and
Whereas, Edith L. Cunningham, of Richland County, is a graduate of Webber High School and attended Midlands Technical College, in 2005 also earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Southern Wesleyan University; and
Whereas, since February 1973, she has been a part of BellSouth in several capacities, notably beginning as the first female lineman in the State of South Carolina but missing her first day of work due to the blizzard of 1973; and
Whereas, since that memorable beginning, Edith Cunningham has admirably filled the positions of Switchman, Frame Attendant, Computer Attendant, Engineering Clerk, Communications Assistant, and Maintenance Administrator and has been a valued member of Communications Workers of America and Telephone Pioneers of America; and
Whereas, not one to neglect her civic duties, she has been of invaluable assistance in her work with numerous community organizations, such as Hickory Ridge Residents Association, of which she is a co-founder and charter member, and Neighborhood Crime Watch, of which she is President, in addition to her service as an election poll worker; and
Whereas, known for her ability to improvise and her sense of humor, she rose to the occasion at a recent Neighborhood Crime Watch meeting, at which she had members using pots and pans in the absence of musical instruments to make their own music in the streets, thus encouraging neighbors to get out in the streets with those at the meeting; and
Whereas, Edith Cunningham is a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, worked for the Office of Black Catholic Ministry and the Modjeska Simpkins Restoration Project, and served for over fifteen years part-time at Midlands Technical College in Student Services; and
Whereas, she hopes to enjoy her well-earned retirement with her three beloved children, Terrainio, Christie, and Gerron; two grandchildren, Emmanuel and Christian; and her five dogs, Faith, Junior, Charity, Miss Minnie, and The Intimidator, which are also dear to her heart. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, commend Edith L. Cunningham, of Richland County, for her outstanding service at BellSouth upon the occasion of her retirement, and wish her much success and happiness in all her future endeavors.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Edith L. Cunningham.
