TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE YMCA BLUE RIDGE ASSEMBLY FOR ITS ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SERVICE, AND TO WISH THE GROUP CONTINUED SUCCESS AND GROWTH IN THE COMING YEARS.
Whereas, on October 6, 1906, Dr. Willis Duke Weatherford, Sr. located the site for YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly near Black Mountain, North Carolina; and
Whereas, in his excitement for the inspirational beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, Dr. Weatherford exclaimed, "Eureka, we have found it!"; and
Whereas, Dr. Weatherford anchored the work of the Assembly in several core values, including the notions that there is dignity in labor, that religion must be intellectually respectable, that religion is indispensable for building a life value system, that every person is made in the image of God and worthy of love and respect, and that in the Assembly's natural setting, staff and guests are encouraged to spend time in reflection, Bible study, or prayer; and
Whereas, in addition to guiding the construction of historic Robert E. Lee Hall, Dr. Weatherford touched thousands of lives through personal relationships with those involved in the Young Men's Christian Association and spiritual leaders in the Student Christian Movement, active at the turn of the twentieth century; and
Whereas, during its rich history, the Assembly has committed to a staff composition which is intentionally international, consisting of more than forty percent of students from around the world and including more than fifty countries; and
Whereas, the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly facilities were entered in The National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of Interior on November 26, 1979; and
Whereas, it is with great pride that the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina pause in their deliberations to honor this exceptional group. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly for its one hundred years of service, and wish the group continued success and growth in the coming years.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly.
