THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY URGE EACH PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE TO JOIN THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION AND THE SOUTH CAROLINA MEDICAL ASSOCIATION IN OUTLINING THEIR SPECIFIC PLANS FOR ADDRESSING THE LACK OF AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE INSURANCE IN OUR COUNTRY AND URGE ALL SOUTH CAROLINIANS TO VOTE IN THE PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARIES ON JANUARY NINETEENTH AND TWENTY-SIXTH TO HELP KEEP THIS CRUCIAL HEALTH CARE ISSUE IN THE FOREFRONT WHEN SELECTING A PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, are charged with addressing and solving many of the issues and problems that our constituents face on a day-to-day basis; and
Whereas, among the major problems facing our state and over forty-seven million Americans today is the lack of affordable health care coverage; and
Whereas, this statistic means that one in seven Americans often must choose between medical care and medicine for themselves and their families and other necessities of life, such as food, shelter, and clothing; and
Whereas, a number of respected organizations such as the American Medical Association and the South Carolina Medical Association are urging both Republican and Democratic candidates to outline their own solutions to this national crisis; and
Whereas, the American Medical Association's Voice for the Uninsured campaign, along with the efforts of the South Carolina Medical Association, is a proactive and positive step in bringing this crisis to the forefront of the 2008 presidential election. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, urge each presidential candidate to join not only the American Medical Association and the South Carolina Medical Association, but many others in outlining their specific plans for addressing the lack of affordable health care insurance in our country.
Be it further resolved that the citizens of South Carolina are urged to use their voices and vote in the upcoming state Republican primary on January nineteenth or the Democratic primary on January twenty-sixth and, in doing so, keep this crucial health care issue at the forefront when selecting a candidate for the next United States President.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the chairman of the Republican National Committee and the chairman of the Democratic National Committee.
