A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND MARY KATE BELL BREARLEY GLASSER, OF RICHLAND COUNTY, AS AN EXTRAORDINARY MOTHER OF FOUR CHILDREN, AND TO CONGRATULATE HER UPON THE OCCASION OF BEING NAMED SOUTH CAROLINA'S 2008 MOTHER OF THE YEAR.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are pleased to learn that Mary Kate Bell Brearley Glasser was named 2008 South Carolina Mother of the Year by the South Carolina Mother's Committee, an affiliate of American Mothers, Inc.; and

Whereas, she was born Mary Kate Bell to the late Mary Ola Rogers Bell and Claude Carwell Bell, Sr., of Florence; and

Whereas, Mary Kate graduated from Marion High School in 1942 and earned a bachelor's degree in business from Winthrop College and a master's degree from the University of South Carolina in education of exceptional children and administration; and

Whereas, as a veteran educator, she is a member of Delta Kappa Gamma International, a professional honor society of women educators, and was named the outstanding special educator of the year in 1977 by the South Carolina Council for Exceptional Children; and

Whereas, Mary Kate married her beloved husband, the late Reverend Cecil Brearley, and in their fifty-two years together they raised four fine children. After his death, she married Floyd Glasser, who died in 2005; and

Whereas, her children are Dr. William DuBose Brearley, a Lexington family physician, Margaret Rogers Brearley Mitchum, a Lexington elementary school principal, Reverend Robert Montgomery Brearley, a Presbyterian minister from St. Simons Island, Georgia, and Reverend John Cecil Brearley, a Presbyterian minister from Greer; and

Whereas, she believes that parenting is an awesome responsibility, requiring prayer, energy, sacrifice, time, and love, and her children express that she passed on to them her values that emphasize the importance of faith, family, and friends; and

Whereas, she was endorsed for Mother of the Year by the Women's Ministries Board of Arsenal Hill Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church where she is a member; and

Whereas, agreeing with the words of the sweet songwriter of Israel, "Children are a heritage of the Lord" (Psalm 127:3), Mary Kate acknowledges that every child is a gift from God; and

Whereas, she believes that her children were sent to her by the Lord, and she accepted seriously and with joy her responsibility to take care of those charges for God; and

Whereas, as sons and daughters of the Palmetto State, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly praise Mary Kate Bell Brearley Glasser and thus follow the words of Proverbs 31:28 concerning the virtuous woman, "Her children arise up, and call her blessed." Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and commend Mary Kate Bell Brearley Glasser, of Richland County, as an extraordinary mother of four children, and congratulate her upon the occasion of being named South Carolina's 2008 Mother of the Year.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mary Kate Bell Brearley Glasser.
