TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR LOUIS KRIEGER, OF HORRY COUNTY, FOR HIS EFFORTS TO ENABLE WORLD WAR II VETERANS OF HORRY COUNTY TO TRAVEL TO WASHINGTON, D.C., TO VISIT THE MEMORIAL DEDICATED TO THE VETERANS OF THAT WAR, AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM FOR BEING RECOGNIZED AS THE 2008 CITIZEN OF THE YEAR BY THE MURRELLS INLET ELKS LODGE.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to learn that Louis Krieger has been named 2008 Citizen of the Year by the Murrells Inlet Elks Lodge #2797; and
Whereas, having served two tours of duty with the United States Armed Forces in Vietnam, Lou Krieger has a special concern that veterans experience the appreciation that their nation has extended to them for their service; and
Whereas, when Murrells Inlet Elks member Jack Platt conceived the idea to send veterans of the Second World War from his community to see the memorial raised to honor them in Washington, D.C., the plan bourgeoned when popular radio host Lou Krieger got involved; and
Whereas, through his efforts in 2007 on radio station Sunny 106.5 WSYN, along with the efforts of students from Saint James High School and employees of WPDE TV15, seventy thousand dollars in donations were received from the community to support the effort; and
Whereas, Lou Krieger not only worked to raise the money, but he also planned and executed the trip that took one hundred twenty World War II veterans by chartered plane from the Grand Strand to see their memorial in the nation's capital on Veteran's Day 2007; and
Whereas, Lou Krieger, also passionate about other issues in his community, considers the most significant event of his thirty years in the radio industry the day Governor Mark Sanford came to the Grand Strand to sign into law the legislation known as Jessie's Law, the toughest law against sexual predators in the nation; and
Whereas, Governor Sanford cited the more than fifteen thousand signatures from the Grand Strand in support of the law, the effort of Lou Krieger, as the reason he signed the bill there, and the radio celebrity continues to lobby for its passage in other states; and
Whereas, among other community initiatives, Lou Krieger has provided labor for three years for the Adopt a Tree Highway, and he has encouraged community donations to purchase and maintain the trees which beautify the local highway; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are proud of the many contributions Louis Krieger has made to his community and to learn that he was named the 2008 Murrells Inlet Elks Lodge Citizen of the Year. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Louis Krieger, of Horry County, for his efforts to enable World War II veterans of Horry County to travel to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorial dedicated to the veterans of that war, and congratulate him for being recognized as the 2008 Citizen of the Year by the Murrells Inlet Elks Lodge.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Wayne H. Smeallie, Exalted Ruler of Murrells Inlet Elks Lodge #2797, and Louis Krieger.
