TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE GRADUATES OF THE ALLEN UNIVERSITY CLASS OF 1958 WHO ARE CELEBRATING THEIR GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY, AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM ON MANY SUCCESSES AND ACHIEVEMENTS WHICH THEY HAVE ACCOMPLISHED AS A RESULT OF THE EXCELLENT EDUCATION THEY RECEIVED AT ALLEN UNIVERSITY.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina are pleased to celebrate with Allen University all the accomplishments of the graduates of the Class of 1958; and

Whereas, Allen University was founded in 1870 by the African Methodist Episcopal Church at a time when the need to educate persons of African descent was compelling; and

Whereas, the school was first known as Payne Institute and was located in Cokesbury, South Carolina. The educational institute later moved to Columbia and was named Allen University after the distinguished and well-respected founder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Richard Allen; and

Whereas, the class of 1958 entered Allen University as freshmen in the fall of 1954, near the end of the Korean Conflict; and

Whereas, among the members of the class of 1958 were many veterans who had served in various branches of the military; and

Whereas, those who came to Allen University at that time had great determination to work hard and excel on the collegiate level and beyond; and

Whereas, as a result of their great zeal for success, many notable graduates from the class of 1958 became productive leaders in their chosen areas. Several members from that class became outstanding teachers, principals, supervisors, ministers, musicians, and concert singers. Several ministers have served as presiding elders in the African Methodist Episcopal Church; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly recognize and salute the members of the class of 1958 from Allen University for their contributions to our State, our nation, and the world. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor the graduates of the Allen University Class of 1958 who are celebrating their golden anniversary, and congratulate them on many successes and achievements which they have accomplished as a result of the excellent education they received at Allen University.
