TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR ALEX KIRIAKIDES, JR. FOR HIS LIFETIME OF SERVICE AND DEVOTION TO HIS BUSINESS, FAMILY, AND COUNTRY.
Whereas, early in the life of Alex Kiriakides, Jr. stories of brave freedom fighters and defenders sparked a love for America while he was still in his homeland of Turkey, and at the age of 93, he continues to believe that it is the greatest country in the world; and
Whereas, filled with hope and promise, he and his family made a dangerous journey to leave their war-torn home following World War I and begin life in the United States; and
Whereas, his father instilled in him a hardy work ethic and sense of discipline that followed him when he cared for his younger siblings after his father's death and as he established a successful business in 1935; and
Whereas, beginning with one cigarette machine, his business has grown into one of the nation's most successful vending operations, and he holds several patents, including a cigarette machine that made him a pioneer in the vending industry by using vocal messages to promote sales; and
Whereas, Alex Kiriakides has used his prosperity to establish and fund numerous charities including the Alexander Foundation, Fishes & Loaves, Boys Home of the South, Connie Maxwell Children's Home, and the United Way; and
Whereas, among his many awards, he was named the 1982 United States Junior Chamber of Commerce Boss of the Year, and at 93, he actively leads the company he started over seventy years ago; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives appreciate the legacy of Alex Kiriakides and his passionate defense of the heritage of the United States, and they wish him many more years of success and happiness. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Alex Kiriakides, Jr. for his lifetime of service and devotion to his business, family, and country.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Alex Kiriakides.
