A BILL

TO AMEND ACT 117 OF 1961, AS AMENDED, RELATING TO THE COMPENSATION OF MEMBERS OF THE COLLETON COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD OF TRUSTEES, SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT THE ANNUAL SALARY AND PER-MEETING EXPENSE ALLOWANCE MUST BE DETERMINED BY THE BOARD.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION    1.    Section 3 of Act 117 of 1961 (formerly Section 21-2173 of the 1962 Code), as last amended by Act 167 of 1997, is further amended to read:

"Section 3.    The board shall annually elect one of its members as chairman and another as vice-chairman. Persons holding such these offices must be eligible to succeed themselves. The county superintendent of education shall, ex officio, shall act as the secretary to the board, and is under the duty of keeping proper records for the board, including the minutes of its meetings. The board shall hold regular monthly meetings, which shall must be open to the public, and special meetings at other times as may be necessary. The members of the board shall receive an annual salary of two thousand four hundred dollars. Each member shall also receive an expense allotment of fifty dollars per meeting except for the chairman who shall receive an expense allotment of one hundred dollars per meeting provided that in no event shall the total amount of expense payments made to any member in a year exceed one thousand two hundred dollars and per-meeting expense allowance in an amount as determined by the board."

SECTION    2.    This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
