CONGRATULATING THE OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS ACCOMPLISHED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA, HONORING THEIR COMMITMENT TO QUALITY EDUCATION, WISHING THEM MUCH CONTINUED SUCCESS AND GROWTH IN THE FUTURE, AND RECOGNIZING MARCH 28, 2007, AS CAROLINA DAY AT THE STATE HOUSE.
Whereas, the University of South Carolina (USC) serves over 240,000 alumni and 40,000 students, on eight campuses, with nearly 2,000 full-time faculty members dedicated to providing the highest quality education in more than 350 degree programs; and
Whereas, the pursuit of excellence in teaching can be seen in numerous top rankings. The 2006 U.S. News and World Report ranked USC fifty-fourth in the nation among public universities, while the South Carolina Honors College has been hailed one of the best in the nation, and the Carnegie Foundation has bestowed upon USC its highest research designation; and
Whereas, USC has ten academic programs ranked in the top ten in the nation, while sixteen programs are ranked within the top 100. Such programs include the international business program at the Moore School of Business; the School of Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management; and the School of Library and Information Science; and
Whereas, USC has also been distinguished with the titles of schools that offer the best value for tuition dollar and the most beautiful campus in an urban setting. USC was also featured as one of the "up and coming universities" nationally by The Wall Street Journal in 2006; and
Whereas, the Carolina Alumni Association, first formed in 1846, serves USC's alumni with numerous programs, such as homecoming reunions, alumni clubs, and scholarships, and has a membership of more than 30,000 alumni who remain connected to USC through the Association's many activities; and
Whereas, USC's alumni contribute four billion dollars annually to South Carolina's economy which in turn supports nearly 50,000 jobs; and
Whereas, USC is continuing to build its legacy with several new projects. Innovista, "the research district of the next 100 years," is attracting internationally renowned scientists, while the Arnold School of Public Health and Research Center is studying the health disparities among South Carolinians and unlocking the mysteries of heart disease, and the University's Technology Incubator continues to create jobs and expand Columbia's knowledge economy; and
Whereas, the University of South Carolina continues to be a source of pride for her alumni and the Palmetto State, enriching the lives of its students and building a better community throughout South Carolina. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate, by this resolution, congratulate the outstanding achievements accomplished by the University of South Carolina, honor their commitment to quality education, wish them much continued success and growth in the future, and recognize March 28, 2007, as Carolina Day at the State House.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Andrew Sorensen, President of the University of South Carolina.
