THANKING THE NATIONAL SOCIETY OF THE COLONIAL DAMES IN THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA FOR THEIR DEDICATION TO THE PRESERVATION AND RESTORATION OF COLONIAL BUILDINGS, ARTIFACTS, AND MANUSCRIPTS, THEIR COMMITMENT TO HONORING THE MEMORY OF OUR HEROIC ANCESTORS, AND THEIR ENCOURAGEMENT OF KNOWLEDGE AND INTEREST IN COLONIAL HISTORY.
Whereas, the National Society of The Colonial Dames of America is dedicated to furthering an appreciation of our national heritage through historic preservation, patriotic service, and educational projects; and
Whereas, Colonial Dames are descendants of founders of our nation who distinguished themselves with their public service. The members of the Society seek to collect and preserve manuscripts, traditions, relics, and buildings connected with the early history of our country and State; and
Whereas, the National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in South Carolina was founded in 1893 and has six town committees; and
Whereas, the South Carolina Society owns three properties, the Stewart-Parker House built in Georgetown in 1750; The Powder Magazine, built in 1712, in Charleston, previously used to store and safeguard the public gunpowder supply and now home to the Colonial Dames State Headquarters; and the Hanover House, built on the Santee River in 1716, now relocated to Clemson; and
Whereas, in addition to the preservation and restoration of these buildings and the donation of furnishings to restore them to historical accuracy, the South Carolina Society created an educational video on South Carolina colonial history to help and encourage our youth to remember and appreciate the remarkable accomplishments of our ancestors; and
Whereas, the South Carolina Society, in cooperation with the College of Charleston Graduate School, created an elementary-age educational program for The Powder Magazine; and
Whereas, the South Carolina Society also awards close to $10,000 annually in scholarships to South Carolina graduate students majoring in topics related to colonial history. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate, by this resolution, thank the National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in the State of South Carolina for their ongoing commitment preserving the ideals and accomplishments of our heroic ancestors, and we wish them much continued success.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. William Mendenhall Webster III, President, on behalf of The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in the State of South Carolina.
