A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING WANDO HIGH SCHOOL FOR BEING SELECTED BY U.S. NEWS AND WORLD REPORT AS ONE OF AMERICA'S BEST HIGH SCHOOLS.

Whereas, Wando High School serves students in grades nine through twelve, with an enrollment of over two thousand nine hundred students; and

Whereas, Wando High School employs a comprehensive academic program offering over two hundred fifty courses; and

Whereas, Wando High School's mission is to educate all students by providing the best practice of teaching, encouraging lifelong learning, and graduating technologically skilled and contributing members of a rapidly changing and diverse global community. The school focuses on active student engagement, differentiated instruction, technology implementation, and standards based instruction and assessment; and

Whereas, Wando High School is engaged in a major restructuring initiative which includes improving the transition between middle and high school, ensuring consistency and rigor in courses, and helping students see the relevance of their classes and connections to their future goals; and

Whereas, U.S. News and World Report's first-ever list of America's Best High Schools ranked schools in forty states based on three criteria: (1) students' test scores on state reading and math exams must exceed statistical expectations given the students' poverty level; (2) the least advantaged student groups must achieve proficiency rates on state tests that exceed state average; and (3) the level of students' college readiness, measured by student participation in and performance on Advanced Placement tests. The one hundred top performing schools were given gold status and ranked numerically, and the remaining schools that met all three criteria were classified as silver schools; and

Whereas, Wando High School was recognized by U.S. News and World Report as one of America's Best High Schools, receiving silver medal status; and

Whereas, the "silver" success of Wando High, which requires no entrance tests, proves that a large public high school serving the general population in a school district also can produce outstanding academic results. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate Wando High School for being selected by U.S. News and World Report as one of America's Best High Schools.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Wando High School.
