Whereas, Ms. Lucy Beckham, Principal of Wando High School in Charleston, was recognized as the 2010 MetLife Secondary School Principal of the Year by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP); and

Whereas, Ms. Beckham was also recognized as the South Carolina High School Principal of the Year for 2009; and

Whereas, Ms. Lucy Beckham has been the principal at Wando High School since 1998, and during her tenure as principal the school population has exploded from 1,800 students in 1998 to more than 3,200 today; and

Whereas, each year the MetLife/NASSP National Principal of the Year program focuses attention on the outstanding work principals do in middle level and high schools across the country. The program annually honors secondary school principals who have succeeded in providing high-quality learning opportunities for students, as well as demonstrating exemplary contributions to the profession; and

Whereas, Ms. Beckham has helped to oversee construction of a new campus and is now running a school that is touted as one of the largest high schools in the State; and

Whereas, Ms. Beckham won out over 50,000 principals in America and the successes at Wando were the foundation for Ms. Beckham's recognition; and

Whereas, in addition to the honor of being named Principal of the Year, Ms. Beckham will receive $5000 towards her own professional development and or a school improvement project of her choice; and

Whereas, Ms. Beckham has been an educator for more than thirty-three years and an administrator for fifteen years, and under her leadership, Wando has won national acclaim, including mention among the best schools in the country by U.S. News and World Report; and

Whereas, under the conviction that quality teachers are the driving force behind the success of a school, Ms. Beckham has recruited some of the nation's top educators to work at Wando. She supports her staff through continued professional development and with the quality feedback received from the 200-plus observations completed monthly by the school's administrative team.

A recent school climate survey showed that over the last four years, teacher satisfaction with the school's learning environment skyrocketed from 85.2% to 97.9% and in the same period, satisfaction with the social and physical environment jumped to 98.5%--a true testament to Ms. Beckham's passion for sustaining a positive and supportive learning environment for teachers and students alike.
